Lack of info, Leaks and Cheating... my considerations and my suggestion

LACK OF INFO:
The game is in temporary "maintenance mode". We will not receive important announcement before 2020 and all other announcements will be preceded by an announcement of an announcement. We all know this but this doesn't mean we're all fine with that. Two important contents from last year (Fleet Carriers and Ice Planets) have been postponed. FDEV said they would have been re-prioritized after Beyond, but after six month since the end of it no information is still available.
While on one side the lack of transparency and info could be justified by a typical business model, on the other side it can't be accepted for such a long time if they can't properly manage the free flow of speculations and keep them to a reasonable level, which is not the case (see following).

LEAKS:
This is exactly the consequence of the above. We have a "deep throat" that is providing time to time information about future contents, some of them already confirmed.
Frontier never said anything about this leak. It's interesting to remember that another leak was revealed several months ago about a SRV exit animation and FDEV promptly replied that it was not an official concept (Will reply) - Video -
The leak about Elite Dangerous reports Legs and Base Buildings. No mention about atmospheric planets or other contents.
More recent leaks showed the 3D model of a Thargoid, confirming FPS and shooting aliens gameplay.
This is an escalation of speculations. At this point some information concerning the future of the game is due.

CHEATING:
I didn't follow too much this cheating story for two reasons:
  • I play solo and when I play Open I don't do it for PvP anyway.
  • I don't care if someone decides to cheat. Cheats is the shortcut to burn your own fun so most of the cheaters will soon(TM) leave the game.
A couple of days ago we had the biggest protest so far, with the Beluga blocking the entrance of James Memorial.
Frontier did nothing about it and again, no communication was given.
However it seems that cheating has been going on since months/years but no one ever complained so loud until recently. It's also interesting to see that for the upcoming small game patches most people keep wishing for their own favourite feature rather than a definitive solution to this problem (see here the discussion about the next update wishes).
That's why I think that the Cheating story is just the "Straw that breaks the camel's back" (that's how you say this in English I guess). So it's the last event that will cause the catastrophic failure (just to make a bit of drama).

CONCLUSIONS:
FDEV could clear all this situation up by making a frank and clear statement and publishing a clear roadmap. Not a detailed one but with clear indications of the direction of the game in terms of type of contents and new gameplay under development.
I'm sure this will not turn down the interest in the game, on the contrary it will improve the quality of interest and it will lead it to the right direction.

No. It isn't.

This version is whilst they work on something new for 2020. It's like Elite 3.x is in maintenance mode whilst we wait for Elite 4.0

Edit: absolutely doesn't mean the game is being ditched but they've already told us we're not getting much before 4.0 (or whatever numbering they apply to it)

It's not 'speculation' that they are continuing to develop the game, and release new updates for it.

That's not 'maintenance mode'.
I checked that definition of Maintenance Mode for software development and you're right.
In the world of software development, maintenance mode refers to a point in a program's life when it has reached all of its goals and is generally considered to be "complete" and bug-free. Continued development is deemed unnecessary or ill-advised, but occasional bug fixes and security patches are still issued, hence the term maintenance mode. Maintenance mode often transitions to abandonware.
I've edited the OP to make it more clear that this is only a temporary phase.

Again, that's not what 'maintenance mode' means. Just because Frontier don't treat forum posters as though they're on the design team doesn't mean the game is done.

Okay, as long as they're still having plans for 2020 the game isn't in maintenance mode in that respect but you can't deny that the game isn't flourishing either at the moment.
SeinseiMatty makes a couple very strong points regarding the state of the game imho.

Dunno, but they've said they're still committed to quarterly releases, as I recall.

Indeed maintenance mode is banded around a lot in the forums its more limited release mode until 2020 the last quarterly patch in April was the smallest major patch I can remember.

And yet it had quite a lot of stuff in it - the new buying/selling screens, the SC Assist, the advanced docking computer, the starter systems...

It did but you surely cant compare it to even the beyond quarterly patches with ships, guardian beacon things etc.?
