Horizons Lack of information is horrendous in this game

As we all probably know, Elite Dangerous is very hostile to new players. The tiny amount of tutorials present is horrendous enough, but the sheer lack of info in the game proper is abysmal. This game might as well have a huge disclaimer saying that you are RECQUIRED to have the Wiki open at all times if you are new. I got past that eventually though, after several hours of repetition and whatnot, I finally got the hang of it.

The comes Horizons, allowing us to land on planets and more stuff! :D Woo! Then I hit a brick wall, I think I was tuck for like, two hours on trying to land on a damn planet. I was certain I had everything I needed, I had all the supplies and was ready to go. Oh, but I was missing one thing. The detailed surface scanner! So this device, which since day 1 has served only one purpose, that being more detailed scans for higher pay for data, now has the function of being required for planetary landings. There was NOTHING telling me about this, no notification that I needed it when I was failing to land on the planets several times, nothing. I only figured it out because I read the description of the scanner again, but even that is not telling you that you need it for LANDING, so it was still a guess. Good thing I was right. Oh yeah, and there are zero new tutorials for anything in the game, not even for Horizons. Awesome.

Seriously, what is with Frontier and giving almost no info to us? Are we just supposed to guess what most of the things in this game do? Are we supposed to just have the Wiki on standby at all times? Even a simple database on items in the game would be helpful for new players. Anything. Instead, we get tutorials for the absolute basics, and like what, 7 tutorials for shooting things? Being someone that has no interest in the combat in this game, it is disheartening to see that it is what has the main focus when it comes to information, as everything else is left for the player to figure out entirely.

Giving your player information isn't always a bad thing. Spending $35-$45 on this new expansion only to hit a brick wall because you are told nothing is pretty bad, since not knowing even about one single thing can prevent you form accessing the content you paid for in the first place.

Just a simple suggestion. Info needs to be given for some things in the game and it can be done in a way that isn't too easy either.

You're actually misinformed.

Detailed surface scanner isn't needed for planetary landings. You need the horizons expansion pack, the module that comes with that, and you can land only on non atmospheric rocky bodies. I don't know where you got the scanner information, but it's plain wrong.

There's tons of videos online if you take the time to look it up. Every item has a description if you actually read it.

The documentation for Elite Dangerous is terrible - you have my total agreement with that.

But stand by for people who know what to do, and through lack of self reflection, will find it impossible to understand that someone else doesn't know what to do!

As I often say to my students - 'everything is easy - when you know how'

Just thought I'd warn you before the flamers!

But I agree - poor, central, clear authoritative documentation - you should see some of the misunderstandings among 'experts' on these boards, because FD have never bothered to actually write it down somewhere.

You most definitively don't need a detailed surface scanner to land.

You only need planetary approach suite, and the game actually installs one on your ship automatically when you have horizons.

But you can only land of planets/moons with the half-moon blue icon on them. Maybe that's what is causing your confusion.

@OP if you are playing ED through Frontier's launcher then it has a link to the latest version of the game manual in the top right corner. This is a PDF but also contained embedded tutorial videos for new additions such as horizons last time I looked. These are also on FD's YouTube channel too.

I'm away from my PC so can't check for & post a direct link to a 2.1 manual (if it's been updated yet) but I've previously posted the quick start, 1.05 and 2.0 links Here.

There's quite a large addition for planetary landings and driving about in the 2.0 version.

Hope this helps!

Isn't the lack of a "MANUAL" for the engineers update itself both funny and sad?

What does an Enginners manual has to do with someone opening a thread complaining about the imaginary problem of detailed surface scanners being needed to allow landing on planets and the lack of imaginary information about it?

There is a manual that gets updated.

There is tutorial videos made by Frontier.

There is Frontier live stream recordings explaining the game.

Everyone starts from the same position of not knowing anything.

Nowt - just taking up your "funny and sad" comment. Wasn't being rude nor criticizing you. Should I have put a smiley there? - Maybe - but I wasn't really seeing it as anything negative, just a comment.

I took no offense whatsoever from your post nor did I regarded your comment as negative. Actually I wasn't the one who posted about manuals. My remark toward the implied lack of manuals causing the issue of discussion was not personal.

I was just stating the fact that the OP was complaining about horrendous (in his words) lack of information about a problem that doesn't even exist, so lack of manuals/information is surely not the cause of someone being unaware of an imaginary need of a surface scanner to land on planets.

Do you know I think my brain has gone all squishy today. I didn't read at all properly, just jumped at the supposition that I had rubbed someone up the wrong way unintentionally and never even noticed it was from a different person. I think I must need to take a break from E D because I have been making silly errors like that for days now.

My apologies.

Surface scanner is not required to land on planets. Landed 100s of times and never fitted a surface scanner. You are miss-informed.

Read the manual, check out the you-tube clips. I have played dozens of xbox and PS games, that have just information of what the game pad buttons do and little else.

Looking at the OPs posting history, I would have to say that this is a toll tread, nothing more.

"As we all probably know, Elite Dangerous is very hostile to new players."

I agree!

I have played many established on line games and its about the same.. In Fact the ED community are likely to be more helpful to new players..

No need to apologize at all mate, as I said I did not take your comment as negative.

When we have walking out of ship feature and station bars, we'll meet at Abrahan Lincoln station at Earth, and I'll buy us a round of beer!

Thank you for the relief. But people so want to be spoonfed that they not even search for a manual or youtube channel.

I must admit, and Im sure the devs feel the same, but having to alt tab out of game to search on google for something, or visit the forums for some info, is pretty ragged...

It's pretty much the same as any other online game. If I need to, I just use another device which I'm pretty sure most people have. There's no need for alt tabbing unless you have a burner phone

I am a new player and the problem is that the game gives you no feedback. If the OP was unable to land for whatever reason it would be fine if the game gave you feedback. It doesn't. I had a mission to deliver agricultural goods to an outpost. When I arrived there was no bulletin board or commodities market and nothing in contacts, so I couldn't complete the mission. Some one on the forum suggested it was because the outpost was in 'Lockdown'. I don't know what that is, but the game gave me zero information. There should be something on the mission info or somewhere to tell me what 's going on. Otherwise as a new player I think I missed something .... As did the OP
