General / Off-Topic Lagging Controller Input

Anyone experience controller lag lately? I've had this happen on two different occasions with two different games (and two different controllers). One example is letting off the stick but my character continues to run for a few seconds longer, or pushing a button and there being a delay in the game registering the "click".

This has only happened after the latest update to Playstation OS. I think it may have something to do with external storage being plugged into the USB port, as both times I had my external drive plugged in. With games like RDR2 on my radar, I'm going to need that storage! Worst-case scenario I can use it to swap games between main and external, but that's a time-consuming process (I'd much rather just play the games directly off the external drive).

Also, this lag happens regardless whether DS4 is using BlueTooth or direct USB to communicate with the console.

Have you moved the USB 3.0 HDD nearer the PS4 by mistake... even mm make a difference...

A reminder to others reading...

DS4 version 1 always uses Bluetooth to communicate with PS4...
Only DS4 version 2 controllers connect via USB once you change the setting manually in device settings will it use USB mode... Even version 2 will use bluetooth untill you change that setting in devices menu...

It's happened to me lately on F1 2018 and RDR2 with left directional with a 2 week old controller. Thought it was just me, thanks.

You'll have to explain this one to me - what does distance matter? If anything, closer should be better (shorter cable thus less impedance).

I did not know this.. I have one version 1, and one version 2 (which is configured properly). I'm pretty sure I was both wired and wireless in all the swapping I did, however.

More info

External USB 3.0 HDD are infamous for generating interference on all devices... Even running a USB 3.0 cable past a radio (2.4 ghz band) device is enough to kill a device from connecting...
Using any wireless device near USB 3.0 cables can result in complete failure to connect...

Using a RF USB dongle next to a USB 3.0 cable is enough to lose connection on that device...
People have to buy USB extensions and RF choke magnets to try to counter the USB 3.0 RF noise from a USB 3.0 HDD cable...

Examples of good and bad USB 3.0 cable run...

I have an original PS4 controller and a PS4 Pro one (with the new light bar) and they are both fine for me. . If I use the controller on a second TV (I have a massively long HDMI cable) every now and then as Graphite suggests I can lose control totally as it disconnects but, no other issues. It usually re-syncs in a second or two. No input lag though even at extreme range from the PS4.
