LAKON announces plans to improve its fleet After the launch of the T10 defender

Today saw an announcement from LAKON which has taken the ship building industry by surprise. In an unprecedented press release the ship building giants released plans to upgrade its impressive trading and exploring vessels.

”LAKON has always been proud to be at the forefront of ship development a position it recently strengthened with the release of the Type 10 Defender. Over the past months it has become increasingly apparent that humanity is facing a grave threat from the sudden reemergence of the alien race known as the thargoids and LAKON’s response was to research, develop and build the Type 10 Defender in record time but we now realise that more is going to be needed if humanity is to survive.

while others are developing weapons and technologies to combat this new threat we at LAKON, knowing our strengths, have come to the conclusion that our best response is to focus on our fleet. Having witnessed the harrowing scenes from the stations that have been attacked it quickly became obvious to ourselves that a huge increase in trading vessels would be required both for future rescue efforts and the repair of those stations already badly damaged. Whilst we have several ship designs within our R&D division those are months away from production, as a result it was decided not to build a new ship but simply to redesign one of our most sought after vessels, LAKON is proud to announce the arrival of the TYPE 7M.

Ever since it arrived on the market the inability of the T7 to utilise medium landing pads has been a subject of great debate amongst the space faring community. Now LAKON can proudly announce the debate was not in vain and having taken onboard the myriad of suggestions we have redeveloped the T7 giving it the ability to land on medium pads. As with all things in ship development there has been a cost for this revamp with a mall reduction in cargo capacity but we feel pilots will happily accept this now the ship will have access to every base or station which fields a medium landing pad. Another added bonus is the reduction in mass will give the ship class increased fdl range, coupling this with the latest in fdl technology we hope to boost the T7M by as much 20%.

Once final ship trials are finished we hope to roll out the T7M throughout human controlled space. In another unprecedented move LAKON promises that all existing owners of the T7 will not loose out, instead on presentation of their current T7 at any of our Dealerships they will be automatically upgraded to the new T7M at NO COST TO THEMSELVES.

The future is dark but rest assured we at LAKON will not falter in our efforts to bring you the best in ship design and innovation”.

Wait, is the Type-7 really being put on a medium pad? Source?

People tell me that ships have tons of free internal space and thats why Frontier can just up internal module sizes at will.

...so apparently Lakon can just build a slightly smaller external shell.

T-7 is getting a buff to fill the role of long range trader (see beta 3 details).

But, personally prefer the 7M design.

Make this an engineering/outfitting option. Go to Bill Turner and get the 7M upgrade package, etc.

Edit: make a thread in traffic beta forum and get enough forum count for Sandy and co to see and consider. There is still possibility to change the buff for T-7

Giving medium pad capability to the Type-7 has been repeated ad nauseum hundreds of times, if they were going to do it, it would've been done by now instead of the other improvements that were made.

And in Breaking News, Lakon withdraw their claim that the T-7 will fit on a medium landing pad, referring to an intern error who republished an announcement from Gutamaya concerning modifications to be made to the Clipper to enable it to land on medium pads.

Ok ok so it’s wishful thinking on my part but if I’m honest I wrote the piece more to show how such a change to ship design could be introduced into the game lore wise. It came about due to a thread on the T7 beta in which the T7 apparently received a fairly large fdl buff. The buff caused quite a stir (and the usual accompanying forum vitriol/arguments) but it got me thinking on how would you justify it in game lore wise. Looking at the issue gave me the idea of a mass reduction and that obviously linked directly to the medium pad issue.

One of the side effects of war is technical advancement, it’s often the spur required to get many projects that have been shelved for various reasons back on the drawing board. Look at world war 2, rockets had been around for hundreds of years and engine technologies for decades but it took a war to merge and advance both. The infamous German Tiger Tank was conceived as early as 1937 but at the time the Germans felt there was no need to build it (the T34 was to show them that error) so it was shelved and that again got me thinking of LAKON. A company such as that would have dozens, if not hundreds of projects in its R&D department, maybe the T10D had been such a project, shelved due to having little reason to be built at that time. Then comes along conflict and LAKON can roll it out in a few weeks/months so it’s not inconceivable they would have, in a dusty corner, the plans for a slightly smaller T7 and sensing an opportunity they would get it into production.

Now I’ve a feeling the ‘lore’ must be the easier bit of the puzzle and that the actual programming side of revamping the T7 to fit medium pads is in reality far bigger, still we can all dream and who knows, when needs must, what lies on a dusty shelf waiting for it’s chance to be born.

April 1st is still nearly two months away, but man it would have been a good one.

Its the height. If it were only a touch shorter, it would be ok on medium pads.

Hey, Zorgon Peterson, time to step up your game! We need a high capacity medium landing pad freighter. Let's call it the "Transporter".
