Land or not on explored planets for additional exploration?

After exploring an unexplored system and finding landable planets, is it worth to land on them for additional exploration data or can I fly away to the next planet to explore?

Driving around in SRV does increase your explorer rank a tiny bit, and there are useful materials to be collected on surface.
But other than that, landing on a planet does not give any additional exploration data.

Until you can use some sort of detailed surface scanner (but clearly not the current Detailed Surface Scanner !!) to highlight areas of interest, no, there's no point.

Unless, as has been said, you need to top up on mats for synthesis, repairs, etc

Like always, FD completely forgot about exploration when planets were added.

Not even something as trivial as a "first landed on by" tag, the planetside equivalent of "first discovered by", or some kind of SRV based soil probing, equivalent to scanning bodies from space.

There was a discussion about adding in ground based exploration and tags. A lot of interesting ideas were proposed. Even Erimus was involved. What did we get for it? Fuel Scoop and Scanner engineering blueprints. [wacko]

That said, with the addition of persistent ground based POIs (which was something Erimus was championing at the time), they don't have any excuses as it's now officially in the game with Thargoid/Guardian POIs.

As some mentioned, you get explorer points for driving around in your SRV. I love landing on planets to look for volcanism and other goodies, but I don't tend to stay very long. I guess it's up to you, but it doesn't give you any additional exploration data or "value" other than the possibility of knowing you were the first to visit a geyser site, brain tree site, or something else. Fly safe!

It would be nice if we could plant a flag, or a marker of some kind, that gives us "first landed" recognition, like first discovery.

Thanks Commanders! :) I have an Ultra Brutal Advanced Surface Discovery Rescovery Scanner but I still have never looked on what interesting surface points it displayed or not… From now, I'll keep an eye on it. :)
