On a moon gathering resources (yawn) and when I attempt to get back in my Python the stupid thing takes off again. I get the message landing area blocked and it goes into orbit. This is happening over and over again. Yes I am in a flat area. I will probably have to blow up the SRV at this rate.

Or re-log?
If you want to skip the process entirely, launch basic Elite (ie NOT Horizons) and the game will automatically put you back in your ship in orbit (because being in an SRV requires you to run Horizons)

I think that happens when the SRV is where the ship is trying to land
Good advice if you are on pc. You can't do that if you're on a console.
That is a factor, the SRV is probably considered an unexpected obstacle.
