Newcomer / Intro Landing (cant!)

I done some training then went out in the game on my first mission. I got to the destination and docked into the station through the little rectangular gap. I then was patting myself on the back and telling myself how fantastic I was. After 5 minutes of trying to actually land on the landing pad (on the correct pad and with the landing gear down) I started getting annoyed and hit the ship a few times then got blown to bits trying to get out before the timer ran out!!

Take 2: Restarted a new game. Got a mission. Went to location. This time I was landing outside ON the station rather than IN it. Still the timer ran out and I couldnt land. Grrrrr..

I done the docking training and can land no problems! At the minute, as you can imagine, im shouting: WHY!!! YOU EVIL DEMON SPAWN SON OF A GUN!!! WHY WONT YOU JUST LET ME LAND THE DARN SHIP!!!

Obviously shouting at the monitor didnt do me much good... so here I am asking for help ;)

Could there be something im missing, perhaps landing is different in some circumstances?

Hopefully someone can help before I run out of oxygen :( Im sad.

Make sure you are facing the correct way.
If you are landing 'on' the station you should be facing the lights with the back of the ship facing the blast shield.

Read this,

you might be having the same problem as I have been, which the majority on that thread believe to be a bug. I'm raising a ticket. I presume the landing display isn't even coming on on your radar when you get close (because although people said to be I must be facing the wrong way, that display should appear no matter which way you're facing).

If it happens again, you just have to cancel the request and then request docking again. But if you're in an 'indoor' station then exit the station before cancelling the request, or else they'll shoot you for trespassing.

checklist:

Request docking?
landing gear down?
Correct landing pad?
landing target screen in front of you turns blue? (make use of manouevering thrusters up down left right)
Land!

did you request docking?

Ok, so you did the docking tutorial and aced it. There's nothing new or different in the Open Play. So I'll toss these comments out there:

1) I use the maneuvering thrusters once I'm over the landing pad. Make sure you have those mapped and are using them.
Here's a video of me landing a Space Cow (Lakon Type 9) back in Alpha. http://youtu.be/t7ryLTBYWKE?t=3m48s
It really hasn't changed much. The landing pad scanner/display looks a bit different. Get over the pad and use the directional thrusters to move into place and down.

2) Make sure your Landing Gear are in the Down position! (If they're not, the computer will tell you.)
EDIT: Make sure the landing scanner turns blue, which signifies you're lined up.

3) Very rarely, the landing pad will be reversed. You can't tell by looking at it. You'll know when you see the scanner change to the landing pad scanner and look at the wireframe of your ship. If you see the back-end/thrusters of your ship, then you're fine. If you see the front of your ship... then you gotta rotate around 180 degrees.

Good luck, Commander!

One thing I noticed is that you need to be facing the correct direction to land.
For example in the stations that looks like a cube you have to have your ships rear facing the stations airlock from where you fly in. (at least with Sidewinder ship, no idea of the others)
I hope this helps a bit..

First get landing permission. Press '1' Then Press 'E' multiple times to select the contact tab. Then press space, 's' and space again to request permission. You need to be within about 8km of the station.

Approach at full speed to within approximately 2km of the station, locate the landing pad, reduce your speed to the middle to lower part of the blue bar and press 'L' to deploy your landing gear.

From above fly towards the pad ensuring the ramp it nearest you and the number is furthest away. I always approach just above the ramp and land like you would a normal aircraft. Remember you can press 'X' to stop completely if you're going to quickly.

The landing target radar will appear on your centre console. Move slowly until your ship is in the middle of the target an the target flashes blue. If you are low enough and slow enough you will be grabbed be the landing magnets.

This appears to be the solution. Thanks. I suppose this makes sense when you think about it but it should probably be made clearer for new players.

I had a similar issue last night too. The best thing to do is to cancel your docking request and the request again. Make sure you move away from your docking bay before you do this as I got slapped with a 400c fine for blocking the original bay.

I then automagically morphed through the outpost and autodocked in the new bay so there are a few issues around docking which I am sure will be fixed in upcoming patches.
