Landing on planets - No Man's Sky as perfect example.

Landing on planets will be sooner or later. I would like to show you a perfect example how it should look like :)
I think No Man's Sky do it perfectly. Entering planet atmosphere is fast and smooth. I really like it and hope to see something like this in ED.

You should check the Pioneer game that I mentioned in the other thread and see how you land on planets there. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I thought No Man's Sky planetary landing looked very unrealistic and certainly lacking in scale. Within seconds of entering the atmosphere they were on the surface. I'm sure Frontier can do better. It would be silly if they go to effort of modeling our known galaxy and populating it with 400 billion stars only to then make a super fast and unrealistic planetary landing as seen in the No Man's Sky video.

Some people think the planetary landing in the No Man's Sky video was probably sped up for demo purposes or is just a placeholder.

NMS totally lacks any kind of scale, at least if what we saw in the videos is anything to go by. I agree that Pioneer does it really well. There's also Evochron Mercenaries, however it too has scale issues. Starshatter allowed you to go down to planets too, but there was a "switchover point". At the end of the day, currently there's no game that lets you experience the thrill of hurtling down into a planets atmosphere in a satisfying manner.

I'm curious to see what FD can come up with. If it's anything like the hyperspace experience, we're in for a treat. Let's wait and see.

I don't see the reason why landing on planets should take minutes. Of course NMS is arcade game but still looks impressive.

Impressive but not really realistic !
It should take minutes I think. Some strategies to avoid overheating, loss of control, ... !

Something close to what was seen in Drew's video is what I hope to see.

I want fiery show, feel of danger and harder experience while landing on the Earth-like planet than we have while docking the station. And forcing someone to enter the atmosphere in combat should be fun. Otherwise it's gonna be dull.

Infinity Universe looks indeed good...

For what it's worth I think No Man's Sky looks very, very impressive indeed. :)

Outerra also looks good, as does Space Engine. Here's Outerra:

The problem will be speed. If the experience is to be seamless, and we're able to essentially fly down to land, most of the journey would have to take place in supercruise or some other mode of stupidly fast travel. So at what point would we exit supercruise, and how would that transition be handled?

There should be nice feelings entering the atmosphere like shaking, burning and other effects. Most of these videos really has calm and gentle entering.

We could assume two things to cut down the deorbit time:

1) Heatshields will be much more effective in 3300
2) Ergo, ships will be able to achieve a much higher re-entry speed

Minutes is probably too much. I'd say it should take roughly the same time you need to dock at a station. The faster you go down, the more fiercely the reentry heat effects should show. There's definitely room for a skill based component that allows good pilots to go down faster, but at a higher risk. Similar to the fuel scooping mechanic, where your scooping vs. heat ratio depends on your flight path.

Absolutely. In fact that's the one thing that I'm really missing from ALL games that offer planetfall at the moment. It's much too smooth. I want it to be a FIRE RIDE down there :)

Just remember: there has to be an equivelant reward for spending the longer time and higher risk of Planet Landing otherwise it's 100% absolutely pointless as a gameplay element (as combat is right now in E:D)...

Minutes? Not sure but why not? If combined with danger of ship destruction planetary landing might be something to consider and not undergo lightly. Dock safely at a station or risk and try to land. There should be an option for a fast reentry also, I think this is valid option. With added risk ofc.

If FD are going to hamstring themselves by insisting on previous Elite versions that had no anti-grav mechanisms we're going to be forced to swallow primitive re-entry techniques ala ablation shields or using current combat shields to ablate the heat of re-entry.

Current combat shields could be used to imagine re-entry speeds without limit but then we're still left with dealing with atmospheric flight models where the ship has no lift from wings. Chemical thrusters? Atomic-reactor thrusters? All very primitive in the 30th+ century. Close-proximity anti-grav deals with both issues perfectly and FD should not discount it.
