Landing on Planets Sucks - because it doesn't work.

What the title says.

I've yet to be able to actually land on a planet. The only planet I've been on is the one I started on in Horizons.

On top of that, I have a mission I can ONLY complete by landing on a planet because it's the only location with the goods I need and it DOESN'T EXIST in the system where I'm supposed to go - Hepa/Watt-Evans Depot - literally is nowhere to be found. I around looking for it on "undiscovered" locations for 30 minutes before I was interdicted and destroyed. It was so fun /sarcasm.

I'm really having a hard time accepting that Horizon's main feature was supposed to be landing on a planet and it's literally impossible.

Even if I could land, the actual outpost I'm trying to get to is nowhere to be seen, even though supposedly it's only a few meters away.

I think this "tutorial" video does a pretty good job of showing how terrible it is to land on a planet, but I can't actually get my craft to land. I just get dropped out of glide and hover like an idiot. It won't even let me downward thrust to the surface.

If you're having trouble finding a planet or location in a undiscovered system, drop at the nav beacon, scan the nav beacon by looking at it, all the system data is now yours. Just an FYI, when you drop into the nav beacon, you have to target the object, Nav Beacon in your contacts, not the location Nav Beacon.

Somewhere in there is a question. First when you get into a system go to the Navy beacon drop out of supercruise and target the beacon in your contacts menu. When you point your ship at it will show you all the bases, names and where to go for missions.

If it was literally impossible nobody else would ever be able to land, I seem to be doing fine so far.

Are you trying to land on a planet with atmosphere by chance? Only airless planets can be landed on so far.

And the planet that doesn't exist is most likely because you don't have the system data for that particular system. Try flying to the nav beacon and interact with it. It should tell you the location of mission.

Good example of people doing things the wrong way, and blaming somebody else just out of pure ignorance.

So you completely deleted my post? Nice.

I love that not being an expert at the game means pure ignorance. Or could it be that the landing UI is terrible?

If you are in an "Unexplored" system, you need to discover the planets before you can land on them. If your ship has a discovery scanner on board (ships all come with one built-in as standard, though you may have sold it to make room for other things), you need to "fire" it. The scanner also has a range (I'm assuming you don't have / can't afford an Advanced Disocvery Scanner, infinite scan range but it costs 1.5 million credits) so any planets too far away will remain undiscovered unless you happen to fly up closer to them and fire your scanner again.

Alternatively, fly up to the Nav Beacon in the system. Drop out of supercruise, fly right up to it, and scan it. Doing this will download a complete system map, for free.

Finally, there is an option, from the Galaxy map, to purchase system data on an Unexplored system before you take off. You used to only get a partial map for doing this, but I think they've fixed that now.

Maybe if someone hadn't deleted my original post, there would be more information. Drop out of glide, stuck in the air, can't even thrust down to the surface. Never make contact w/the outpost that's a few meters away.

What do you mean "frawd"?

And the reason that other planet "doesn't exist" is because the system is unknwon to you. Trying flying to the nav beacon and activate it as Rance said. That will reveal your mission destination in system,.

Or get a discovery scanner, or buy the system data in the map (if it's available).

The landing system works just fine once you find a planet you can land on. Just be careful on high-gravity worlds: gravity is currently the only thing in the game that can break the Space Speed Limit(tm), and slowing down from that can be... difficult.

Your original post is not visible cmdr...The first thing I saw was Caramel Clown's response.

Seeing you repost the problem I would suggest that you report it as a bug...I have landed hundreds of times on planets and never seen this problem before.

The planet has an OUTPOST. The one I was actually trying to land on. It drops me out of jump, does the glide thing then drops out of glide and just moves extremely slowly to the target, never reaching it and never letting me land. I've tried this on like 5 different planets. Same crap.

That is really weird, and you should contact technical support. But they will likely ask if you have the latest drivers loaded for your computer. It might just be a drivers problem. Worth a try.

Sounds like a personal problem. 0 issues here. Hundreds of landings.

Are you getting an "emergency drop - too close" message?

Other things you want to check: make sure you have Horizons, you need that to land on planets. Also make sure that when you launch the game, you're launching Horizons. It's possible to launch just the base game even if you have Horizons (this is mostly used to unstick people who get stranded on a planet due to a bug or something), and obviously that would cause problems with landing.

Also a forum tip: it's easier to get good advice if you chill out and explain your problem calmly. If you just come barging in here raging and frothing at the mouth, you're more likely to just get your thread locked.

Once you've completed your glide, what's the time / distance from you to the outpost? A bad glide can still leave you 3-4 mins out, in which case you should go full power to engines and boost constant, it'll cut the time down a lot.
