I've tried to get a ship though the open pad area but there's an invisible barrier that prevents you flying in there.

Luckily the asp wasn't solid and I passed right through it. Was very nearly a Brown Alert launch though.

I was eager to try that. Just didn't want to sacrifice my ASP for that experiment. Apparently you can go inside the dock while the platform in lower position.
