landing take off tutorials for larger ships?

................ And it also doesn't help with going in.

Docking computer will learn you how to do that - plus there are nice visual clues provided at the far end of the station to let you see if you are central or not (plus the centre-marker I referred to above also works for when you are outside).

Put 4 pips in shields and nothing can go wrong even you hit afterburners and smack into the letterbox.

Pay attention to the cockpits position in outfitting as guide to where the cockpit is, for example the anaconda cockpit is very high up at the back.

I can only repeat what someone told me regarding the Anaconda - aim it so you will be afraid that the top of the mailslot will hit your forehead.

Again, four pips to shields (all power to shields) and approach slowly. Nothing will happen if you scrape the letterbox a bit, just some flashing lights. Have courage and practice. Also if you don't have VR, get a cheap TrackIr clone - with it you will be able to dock the Conda SIDEWAYS via the mailslot. Been there done that, also with Imperial Cutter.

Also, landing gear down - it will be a failsafe if you accidentally hit boost :D

Yep I've personally crashed every big ship (not the cutter no imp rank) in the game into the slot at full speed and got also tangled up in the toastrack thing, without ever losing one. 4 pips to shields is a never fail training mode for biggies.

People sending LOL over local comm is the worst thing that can happen.

This is all advice I've already read but thanks for putting it all in one place for the future...I'd STILL like to be able to practise 1st with no risk hence my thread.

I can add this to the mix :)

Gotta love these sort of completely unhelpful posts, just never get a job as a teacher.

As shown below, your pride is the only reason that post isn't helpful. It's just the plain truth, and one of the qualities of a good teacher is the ability to speak frankly, when necessary. Fish, or cut bait.

If you want to practice on the cheap, you can use a Clipper for this purpose. It's fairly large, and getting confident with it at higher-than-optimal speeds through the mail slot should be adequate preparation for the larger ships.

I don't agree at all with making any of the larger ships an option in any of the tutorials - part of the experience of those ships is the excitement and achievement of finally getting one, and flying/landing/docking them well is a next step in progression for a lot of pilots who should be fairly seasoned by the time they get one. The ability to muck around in them the moment you buy the game removes all of that entirely.

Also, the rebuy is part of the risk for even sitting in the pilot's chair in all ships. In the larger ships, the risk is substantially higher. If you are not confident enough to accept the risk of launching your brand new large ship, and flying it out of a mail slot (let alone doing any activity that carries higher risk than that), then the fact of the matter is that you aren't ready to buy one yet. There is no shame in this, get there when you are ready, and don't worry about what anyone else says or thinks.

You haven't said one way or the other, but the mail slot really is the least of your concerns. If I were you, I would be more concerned about my skill with the Interdiction mini-game, my piloting skill on worlds >1g, my ability in Combat, and my ability to generate income/recover from large losses, than anything else when it comes to flying the large ships. If you have shields at all, the mail slot really just isn't that much of a danger, and certainly does not need a tutorial option.

Edit: Here is something that might assuage some of your concern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRYWlezRLE4

Nope no pride involved at all, I have read these forums diligently over the years and got warnings and instructions on how to do things, I have no trouble being taught. Some teachers are crap, especially those who insist everyone gets thrown in the deep end regardless of how it would effect the student. A "good" teacher knows different methods of teaching for different pupils.

I don't want to practise on the "cheap", I want to practise with zero cost. Seems many here don't understand the concept of that. I'd like the equivalent of an airline pilot training facility, where scenario's can be created to train up (and even refresh old lessons after a break).

And once again I'll stress...."I" can play this "GAME" how I damn well please. gawds sake there's some colossal arrogance on the forums with people utterly incapable of empathy or sympathy.

Well, except for the lack of a big ship tutorial.

touché (turtle away)

I just get fed up with the "if you're no good then don't play the game nonsense", just because I want to practise first I'm a stupid noob who shouldn't fly anything bigger than a sidewinder?

oh and while I'm in a complaining mood ;) THANK GOD airports arn't setup like the space stations in elite. Traffic control is fudging useless, Landing and taking off on the same "runway" at the same time and towards each other. Minimal ILS. Oh and make a mistake and a battery of AAA will blow you out of the sky. Dystopia Sci Fi writers would be proud. :)

.................

Look, you have been told how to do it, I even stuck up screenshots to show how to align when leaving. If you have shields you won't die even if you scrape, if your landing gear is retracted you won't stick on the toast-rack, if you stay under 100 then any bumps won't bring you a fine, a docking computer will get you in and illustrate the alignment with the guide points on the rear of the station (3 lights).

I think that for each tutorial there should be a subsequent option to select the ship you want to do the tutorial in.

Note all these ships will be E rated "shop new" so basic combat or take off/landing can be attempted in Vulture, Anaconda, or even Cutter.

Hopefully this is would be a minor tweak to the game programming-wise and would be a great post 2.4 QoL quick win.

actually, I like this so much I am posting this in the suggestions thread!
