Landing Video with Extra Chatter

If you've ever worked in or around an airport, you'll know that there are always several radios in use at once. One for the tower, one for the ramp and sometimes one for ancillary services like fuel / food trucks, security, etc. You get used to it and eventually your ear filters out the rest and focuses on what you need. The rest forms background chatter.

The landing video the devs put out with a vocal track for the 2.1 patch (Full points to Vindicator Jones for the original idea) was good, but I thought it could be better. I found some ATC chatter from an aircraft carrier and mixed it into background audio of the original video. I think it's more in line with VJ's idea and certainly sounds more authentic.

What do you think?

I like it.

If it were to be in the game they would need some lengthy recordings to play on the second channel so we don't notice the people in the background saying the same old things every-time we dock :)

Also, the example video that Frontier did was without the station announcer. I wonder if they've been removed for 2.1 or (more likely) they wanted the video to focus on ATC. I wonder how your example would sound with the station announcers

I love your idea don't get me wrong but I think I prefer it the way it is, I hope that by the year 3000 they have found a way to eliminate background noise for a multitude of reasons, Who is to say that comms are used through radio even. But great work with the video :)

If automated as the voice that talks to us directly will be, they could base it on NPC (or real commander) ships in the same instance. Spot an NPC also coming in called Roger in a Type-6 and just catch a bit of background chat...

"Lakon Romeo Oscar Golf your speed is good maintain current course."

Definately sounds better to me. I like what FD have done and this extra chatter makes the station seem really busy, in stark contrast to the radio silence you'd get out in deep space. Would make finally arriving at your destination all the more welcoming if youve been out on a long trip. Would be nice to see this kind of thing implemented. Good job. :)

I was also expecting a bit more radio noise near the station just like in your example. What we are going to get is good for starters, perhaps they might add one additional (subtle) layer of random chatter afterwards.

Thumbs up from me. Would love to see more AI chatter and things like radio channels implemented. Must... resist... temptation... to mention... Falcon 4...

I like it, but, even in my real airplane I tune others out. I only perk up when my N number is called. What I did like about your video was the dude talking to just you. The background noise is not needed. In another topic other people wanted a G1000 flight path to show up too.

people still play Falcon 4.0? I loved that game back in the day. That and gunship (and gunship 2000)!

Rather than have canned chatter, I think it'd be cool just to play all the traffic messages for your instance. Make your own louder and be able to filter out the rest, but that way you'd get a real sense of the dock's activity. Also handy for bounty hunting to listen for a specific ship's departure.

Nice work!

I like the idea of ambient comms chatter very much. Ideally I'd like it from the point of arrival in system, and proportionate to the system and proximity to a station.

So, in a zero-planet, zero-station system I'd expect zero background chatter, and then ramping up from there.

I know what FDev have shown is the first cut, and it will hopefully evolve, but even if it doesn't, it's already a nice add-on.

However ambient chatter would imho really add to the sense of 'being there', esp. if we could have ground-crew chatter... 'Maintenance to pad 33, ramp defect indicated. Cleaners to bay 4, chemical spill in cargo area. Mr and Mrs Smith to the first-aid tent, little Tommy is waiting for you there.'

This would be great, I hope we end up with something like this. Perhaps the amount of chatter could vary depending on how busy the station is.

I agree with Marcus. The NPCs have names, so it'd work just as well to be able to hear their traffic chatter as background noise, at least while you are outside station. Once through the door, I'd want to hear the old (current) PA announcer, in addition to personal radio comm from controller.

What if, the closer you got to a station (in particular any station you approach with orbital cruise/glide, and any future equivalent system) the radio chatter could be heard as static that's just to muffled by static to discern words, but gets louder and clearer as you get within last 50 then 20 then 10 kms.
