Hardware & Technical Laptop query

Hello,

I'm looking at buying a budget laptop (yes, that's all funds wil allow) and I'm wondering if any of the budget models will run ED at a playable fps on low? - obviously my PC and Hotas will be my #1 way of playing but if I'm away from my PC, playing on a laptop would be excellent.

Sadly I know little about laptop hardware as I've never wanted or needed one before so always stuck to my desktop. I'm looking at around £300 possibly £350 at an absolute maximum.

Any recommendations or should I not even think of doing it? :)

You need to look at the specs of the laptop and see if they are adequate.

I'm sorry to put a downer but I doubt it. ED is a very demanding piece of software.

May I ask, what is your budget and must you get a laptop?

Yeah I doubt it too but hey it was worth an ask :)
Budget is £300-£350.

If you have the space, you may manage a reasonable desktop for that.

Remember to check out the minimum specs. A lot more RAM than minimum and improve on anything else you can manage.

If you are the patient type and have a small degree of skill, you might want to think about putting somehting together.

First you need to decide what you are looking for. I, personally won't settle for anything less than solid brands. I like to start looking at a site such as Novatech. They are great quality, have brillint after sales and are not overly expensive. They also supply a lot of information. You can start there and decide what you want then look elsewhere for it. Amazon is always a good source.

A decent ASUS motherboard for a start: This is pretty keen and the price is not bad. A similar should be available elsewhere with significant savings: http://www.novatech.co.uk/search.html?s=ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER Intel Z97 £109.99

A processor of course. But this MB takes a number of differetn one so in your shoes I might look at what is minimum and think of upgrading later: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/processors/intelhaswell1150/bx80646i54460.html £144

A good PSU is a must. I like the Novatech brand because they are reliable and their guarantee is worth the money. Don't buy a cheap or a second hand PSU. http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/451wto650w/nov-psg601.html £47

In Novatech that's about £300. You still need a decent graphics card. Shopping around, most of this stuff could be had for a lot less.

Sound card can come later. Remember, fans, keyboard, mouse, monitor, pastes ect., a case, (about £25 for an ATX case. Try to find one that has removable covers on both sides, but avoid fancy lights, bells and such. Also, some come with a PSU built in. Check its specs. You may save a bundle or you may be left with junk.)

It is the slow approach of course. I does mean you will work toward what you want. This is the approach I'm using right now. I haven't bought anything yet, just keeping an eye on what is available. I aim to have a new machine around the beginning of January for example. I anticipate some new tech by then which may mean I can get the latest stuff now a bit less then.

I will be starting by re-using my current ATX case and my PSU is only a few months old. I will also start with my current keyboard and mouse, even monitor.

Get the idea?

I guess you didn't read the part of my post where I said I already have a PC and Hotas? ;)

Thanks anyway but my PC is more than capable of running elite, I just wondered if a low spec laptop would, I've already found the one that's within my budget but has an Intel HD 5500 GPU so Elite is out. But that would have just been a nice bonus, it's not something I need or something I'm buying it for.

I bought one of these which runs the game well enough to play.

There is a cheaper model here which has a slightly lower spec APU and GPU - but it's closer to your price range at £375 (with the R6 M255DX 2 added).

No, it's not. It uses very little resources compared to other games, or even full blown applications.

However, 300 Quid is not a useful budget for a new laptop.

Laptop should have dual or quad core intel CPU, a discrete GPU and minimum 8GB of RAM. It is advised to not use HDDs in laptops, but SSD.
There is a possibility you find such a machine on the used market. I would generally advise to look for business machines, as they typically have a better built quality and longer lifetime.

That £350 laptop posted above that someone else posted, will play ED ok on medium / low settings.

The AMD APU's (which is what is in that laptop) offer the best performance for gaming when your wanting to game on budget without a doubt. You will not get the same performance from a similarly priced Intel laptop with it's integrated graphics.

I have a laptop with the AMD A10-5745 APU, the one above has a A10-7300 APU. They are almost identical in CPU performance , the GPU's in both machines have 384 shader processors and 128bit memory bus clocked slightly higher in that machine above. So I would expect slightly better performance in that laptop above than mine. I have played ED on the above settings on that laptop, Battlefield 4 pulls 30FPS running mantle and on medium settings too. . Not bad for £350. I wouldn't expect blistering performance though, but games are playable. Obviously if you had the money I would say, Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU but for a laptop, the cost is much higher.
