Large Screen ED

This weekend my girlfriend made the unwise decision to leave me unsupervised all weekend. As a direct result of this, I bought a new television. The plan is to put the old TV in the bedroom to replace the old one that I have in there.

But...whilst I am free to experiment, I decided to connect my old TV to the computer to replace the 24 inch monitor I usually use and try out ED on a 40 inch screen, at about 2 feet from my face. The result is amazing. Unfortunately I am two days out on an exploration run, so I can't try it out with stations, but on a large screen stars seem to really loom over you and you drop out of supercruise. Planets tower over you (part of this is that the desk is at just the right height so that my eyes are right on the center of the screen.)

Unfortunately, my old graphics card isn't really up to the task of displaying at full HD, but since I was away from stations I turned it up to 1920x1080 and the effect was even more amazing. I'm planning to buy a new pc later in the year, so this TV might be making a comeback as my ED ship canopy.

If I had the money, I'd get two more of these and surround my field of vision with them.

I anyone out there gets the opportunity to plug their rig into a large TV, then definitely give it a go. I know it's not the same as a Rift, but it's the closest most of us can get for now.

The only real downside is that I know that I'll have to go back to my old monitor next week.

Yes... 65" 4k Samsung... Could run 4k but took a hit on fps.. So changed settings to 1920x1080 interlaced.. Love it on the big screen, not a great card so run at 60fps... Really great experience... Oh yes have to wait till the misses is out!!

Projector in full HD :) so 110"... loses some of the definition as the blacks aren't great but the ridiculous size of everything makes up for it.

And when the CV2 comes out I'll be properly wallet-sectomy'd.

There are a group of people here who hate STEAM, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate! While I personally love STEAM, I do respect that amount of vitriol, if only because it's often enough entertaining to see on a forum.

My point is, STEAM allows you to stream your games onto your TV. It's called "Big Picture". Soon, there's going to be a wireless connector box that will make the process foolproof.

+1 rep.

The only problem I have with this is I'm running ED on a laptop, albeit a pretty hardcore one, oh yeah I'd need a keyboard as well... thanks!

I had this thought while at Target today looking at 120hz teles. I like my vg248qe, but having a big ol living room tele would be great for this.

I bought a 31.5 inch monitor in January. I found out that the HUD becomes somewhat annoying during fights. I already don't like how half of the target information vanishes from the field of view when decellerating or turning. And now I even have to turn my head to see what is visible of that info. There's room for improvement here. :)

32inch here too, lemme tell you one thing I found out...Headtracking is perfect for a close 32 inch screen.

Running on a 42 inch LG 4k TV. Unfortunately I didn't realize what the 4:2:0 colour rendering bit meant when I got it. Kind of regretting it now but it runs ED ok in 4k resolution. I'm used to playing in 30-40fps range so low frames don't bother me that much. The game looks awful in HD on a big screen - even interlaced. Jaggies from hell.

I tried it on an old projector I had lying around but the blacks and resolution were so poor it was a rubbish experience tbh. I also use 3 x 23in monitors occasionally. Pretty cool but those bezels are a real pain and you lose the height that a big TV can show.

I'm loving it on my 40" Samsung, relocated to my office with the full support of my girlfriend. (There's a projector in the lounge, so we're still kinda sorted there.)

Someone else noted that colour rendering on a TV can be hit and miss and reds - in particular - are lamentably fuzzy. I seem to recall there's an LED arrangement thing behind that. On the flip side, turning on some of the motion smoothing tech in the TV gives quite a pleasing effect and I'm hooked enough at 60fps 1080p not to get twitchy when I see multi monitor setups.

Hopefully I can avoid any more spend until the production Rift hits...
