Now that we can dogfight near a planet surface, knowing how high above the surface you are is critical.

I'd like to see if there would be community support for a larger HUD Altimeter reading below 1KM. As soon as you hit 999M or less altitude the larger version I mocked up below would fade in to let you see how high above the terrain you were. This would also aid in landings and low level flight / racing.

Yay or nay?

How about some heading markers aswell when in Supercruise around a planet. would be useful to locate N E S W etc whn pinpointing a location on a planet

No - not that big anyway.

Making the current indication slightly bigger I could agree with.

It could also perhaps change (colour, bold, something eye-catching anyway) below certain level(s).

I'm really not sure even that's necessary though - once I figured out that the bars to the right of the altitude figure showed vertical acceleration, my landings became a lot smoother....

The current readouts work well for landings in 2.0, but not in combat for 2.1.

The color change for very low alt is a great idea though. Under 50m it can turn red, for example.

Some military aircraft have the alt reading in a box so it sets it off from everything else.

If you watch the first few seconds of the video below, you can clearly see the ASL alt on the right in a box with a pointer ( 4780 ) and below that is his radar AGL alt ( 0 during taxi ) in a simple rectangle.

Maybe something as simple as that would help?

Something like this I would support. The OP's version is way too intrusive.

The concept is good, making the UI easier to read but at the same time it is way to large and in the way, pretty much blocking out your view. A few other nice things that could be used are an altitude based on the planets average 'sea level/surface level' that way I can also see how tall mountains are without minimal effort and for science!
