I define a wing/faction as a single faction in a home system expanding influence accruing assets systems etc.
Okay - in the sense of a BGS faction intentionally supported by one or more players, Likedeeler of Michel at 102 systems, followed by Dukes of Mikunn at 101. They've flipped back and forth for the lead a bit in the last few months.
Mangal Oemie's stat's thread gives you more info on that.
Are you noticing it? The bubble is heating up, and feels increasingly crowded. As a diplomat for the Alliance I see a rise in conflicts and potential for conflicts between player groups. Where a year or more such conflicts were rare, the frequency has gone up and now it seems every week some...

Everyone has their agenda which no doubt is peace. I get that but how is that balance maintained? Why doesn't one huge playerbase faction(s) just steamroller in?
Mainly the limiting factor is expansion rate - a single faction can only expand approximately once every two weeks, so those giants just over 100 systems are about as big as a faction can be given how long the game has been going. On the scale of the 20,000 system bubble it'll be a while before they get close enough to steamroller you. Probably. Unless you're unlucky.
Additionally, while it's not as severe as it was, there are operational limits on how many systems a player group can manage. A 100-system faction can expand to and take over just a few systems at once - but it can be attacked in all 100 systems at once. So it's not advisable for them to make
too many enemies - you might not be able to keep your own system against their assault, but you could cause them serious firefighting across tens of their systems for months.
At the moment, only around half the systems in the bubble are controlled by player-backed factions (of one sort or another), so factions can grab more systems without needing to get into fights over already-claimed territory unless they want to. In four years time, that might look rather different.
