Newcomer / Intro Laser-Mining in Hotspots

After some bounty hounting & exploring I decided to try out something new. So outfitted my Krait MkII for some laser-mining.
Recently I travelled to a Painite hotspots, DSS'ed the ring and flew directly into the heart of a Painite hotspot in the ring.

I shot out over half of my limpets to prospect lots of asteroids, but not a single of them contained any gram of Painite. To not completely waste my time & limpets, I mined the other minerals and after an hour I came back with a pathetic profit of around 150k.

What I wanted to ask you: Is it normal, that even in the center of a hotspots after wasting 50+ prospector limpets you still won't find any of the desired material? Is there any better way for efficient (Painite-) laser-mining?

If you are talking about Painite - yes 😁.

Painite is special.
In Metal Rich rings, you will find Painite hotspots that will (should) contain Painite core asteroids. Detectable with the PWA (if it works...) and mineable with the usual core mining methods.
In Metallic rings, you will find Painite hotspots that will (should) contain Painite in laser-mineable asteroids.

So, your experience is perfectly normal if you were looking for laser mineable Painite rocks in a Metal Rich ring - there will be none.

Oh, and the same planet may have both Metallic and Metal Rich rings - usually in this case Metallic as the (narrow, easy to miss) inner ring and Metal Rich as the (wide, obvious) outer ring.

Hot spots are concentrations mainly for stuff that can be mined primarily by the newer techniques and are not necessarily a significant advantage for laser mining which is influenced more by the ring type (metallic, metal rich, etc) and reserve status (pristine, depleted, etc).

Go to "HR 8461". On the 6th planet (inside ring) there is a double Painite hotspot. Aim for the centre of the smallest hotspot.
You'll find Painite in most rocks and there are about a million Fleet Carriers there that are buying Painite. You can generally get up to about 700k per tonne, restock at the carrier and be back at the hotspot inside 5 minutes.
If you don't own a fleet carrier it is way more efficient to just sell to one of them and let them do the flying about to find a decent price.
Painite prices are now variable according to local demand and how much Painite you have in your ship when you land so it can be frustrating to find a decent sell spot as an individual commander. Especially if you have a big ship!

Hotspots are a significant advantage also for laser mining. However, this presumes that the mineral you are going for is actually laser mineable in the ring type as per #2.

One additional thing i've noticed is that occasionally you drop into a hotspot and pickings seem to be very slim. If i fire off more than about 4-5 prospectors and don't see any Painite, I'll low wake out, turn around and drop back into the hotspot again. Not sure how the RNGness works here but this does seem to work for me...

Don't bother keeping the other metals / minerals - just eject them to make more room for Painite. 1t of Painite can often be worth more than a cargo hold full of other metals/minerals.

There is no doubt that mining in a double Painite hotspot (such as the one I mentioned above) provides significantly higher volumes of Painite than anywhere else. It consistently takes me around 3 hours in my Cutter to collect 512t of Painite - Which you can sell to a local Fleet Carrier for 700k Credits per Tonne. Total profit = c.0.4Bn So you can make about 1Bn every 6-8 hours of playtime.

When you get enough money - Cutter is a good ship for laser mining - if you have the Imperial Rank. here is an example build - link

If you engineer the power distributor - you can run 4 Mining lasers from it.

Good luck Cmdr!! o7 :)

General tip of mine for Painite mining: Avoid metal rich rings like the plague unless you're only interested in core mining. Metallic rings contain ALL of the above. Laser mining, SSD mining, SD mining, Cores, they can ALL be found in a metallic ring hot spots. Just bring the tools for everything and you won't ever get bored (unless mining bores you, of course).
