Last night i bought a Cutter!

Firstly id like to appologise to the poor CMDR i dragged 500lyrs to Sothis this morning, i thought it was a little nose heavy, couldnt see you honestly :( and the guy in the sidewinder coming through the grill as i pressed boost, im sure your rebuy wasnt that much :(

So, last night i finally make Duke rank and went and scrapped my conda ( which i absolutely hate, its horrible in every single way ) and forked out for a cutter. Then spent several hundred million upgrading it and several hours visiting engineers :) To anyone currently grinding their way up the ranks for one of these ships - trust me - its worth all the hassle. Its speed is incredible for its size, mines boosting to 420 and cruising at 340. Put 6A shields on to accomadate the extra 256t cargo rack, full weapons load - 2 x beam lasers and rest multi-cannons. shield boosters, chaff, heatsinks, mines extra large fuel tank.. it jumps 30ly empty and 24ly full (576t atm) and has a range of around 220ly before needing juice ( not maxed out the engineering stuff yet, ill be able to get more speed + range over the next few days ). A word of advice though the first time you take it out, this thing hates stopping!! And i mean it REALLY hates stopping! Stations, planets take it slow and you need full power to engines otherwise it just wont change direction, almost caught me out, wondered why it wouldnt do as i told it then saw i only had 2pips to engines. Beut to fly and a real cash machine. Thinking of buying another and fitting it for exploration.

GL peeps.

can't say it better :D

be very cautious the first time you approach a high-g planet - this was the only thing that killed me .... gravitation adds to the unstoppability of a cutter.

welcome to the club, and enjoy! (mine is a strict trading build, i prefer small ships in combat.)

Congratulations on your Cutter, impressive achievement!

And by "high G" he means anything above a .4

Yup. I've lost a Cutter to a high G world before....I actually winced when I realized just how fast I was coming in and how futile my efforts to stop were going to be.

To stop a Cutter for docking, I usually boost once after drop in, then turn it around and apply the main drive to the task. When under 100, I turn it back facing the station and squeeze in.

Well, I used to do that. After level 5 DD I just boost once and throttle to 0 and by the time I'm at the grill I'm slowed down enough.

Vertical, lateral and reverse thrusters are all pretty-much non-existent. This makes the Cutter the epitome of the imperial mindset: only forward, and damn anyone in the way.

...I now have the strong desire to paint "Only Forward" on the side of my Cutter's hull, ha.

yes, yes.

mindfull people have a bumber at the front: "sorry, i would stop even for you, but i can't.* (*please contact my lawyer for payment of speeding fines anytime)"

It's more the fact that the Gutamaya design philosophy is form over function, and putting nasty things like retro thrusters in just spoils the beautiful flowing lines of the ship.

scrapped my conda ( which i absolutely hate, its horrible in every single way )

This is what made me fall of my chair.

You are referring to the Anaconda?!?!?!?
It is one of the best ship's in the game.
It is superb at everything, except for landing at outposts of course :).
My Anaconda is a beast. I love that ship.

I have a Cutter too and it is the queen of all traders for sure.
Can't afford a combat outfitting yet, so I have not tested her in battle conditions.

Lesson #1 in the Cutter (or any big Ship) : Do not afterburn into or out of a Station :D

Thank me later...

PS.
Ship really should ship (pun) with a rear Decal "We brake for nobody! (*) we couldn't if we tried"

Feel like a BIG man, now, LOL

You should, because I do! Love the Cutter...probably more so because I've lusted for it for a long time.

It is the only ship I put a docking computer on...i've managed landing on 1+G planets manually but there is something about the autodock taking the helm of such a massive ship that is hugely satisfying. I'm looking forward to having space legs...let the autodock engage, run to the staircase, start walking down as the ship is landing...stepping off at touchdown, BASKING like a golden god.

Its like flying an old shoe! I think maybe its because the cockpit is so far back and high up - Dont like it at all!

Sorry but I love my Conda, the Cutter is a big elephant! ;)

The key to flying the cutter is managing and thinking ahead of the drift , if you turn while in full throttle it will drift like crazy (which can seem endless at times) .. however to manage this all you need do is throttle down and wait till speed hits around 150 , you can actually hear the change in engine noise and the drift will begin to stop , soon as this happens you can go full power again and your vector will be straight where you point the nose. The strafe thrusters for up/down and lateral movements arent very strong though so keep this in mind while moving around stations etc.

A great armed bulk trader who can take a beating and outrun most of the threats it comes up against.

You may want to start obeying the speed limits.
Small/medium ships can kamikaze real easy against a boosting Cutter and the station defences still make short work of an A8 shield. Expensive under any circumstance, but very annoying during a CG.

Oh yes, you can squeak past an Annie in the slot if you are both good pilots. A T9, or another Cutter? Never gonna happen.

Ahem ... :D
