News Last 'Peek' before beta - planetary surface details

This reminds me of a question: can the headlights be switched off? I have a feeling that the landscape would look better without being illuminated by the SRV's light cone all the time. It looks a bit garish at times, especially on bright surfaces.

Thankyou David :) Nice to know we'll be having some interesting landscapes to drive over, not just fly over.

Cheers,

Terrain looks great! But the shadows look like they're on backwards. Do the SRV headlights illuminate the shadow patches on the textures or they only determined by the position of the main star?

Oops, out of fuel......how will CMDR Braben escape from this pickle? ;) Fantastic video, btw, can't wait til it goes live in mid-late December :).

This looks much more like it.
The boulders and rocks need some work still, especially in improved texture and variation (size and shape) but otherwise a very decent start.
I hope we can also get some variation in surface texture even between each same class of world - rocky worlds shouldn't all have the same surface detail and ice worlds likewise.

One thing I noticed in this video and perhaps someone can comment.
The SRV engines can't be heard revving away like a go cart on a race track and all we hear is the sound of the tyres rolling across the surface which actually adds immensely to the "All alone in space" and eerie feel.
I actually don't think the engines should be so loud as previous videos (just a quiet hum like an electric powered vehicle) it is too arcadey and action oriented to fit with the exploration vibe.

Are there different sounds for the vehicle when tracking with the scanner and when racing around a base and fighting?
(That would be cool to have some context driven sound effects just like we do with music)
Please don'y say it was quiet because it was running low on power :(

Edit.
Having watched it again the engines are quite loud still when it is sped up but quieter is definitely better in the exploration context.

Also, I wondered what that grey line was one when you lifted off, turns out it was the planet rings. They don't look right at all so hopefully that will be worked on as well.

With this new surface we enter into another dimension. A pleasure for the eyes. Thanks to the Frontier team, for all the good work
