Late 2020... seems quite close to new gen console launches. New engine/game?

The more I think about it, I think the 2020 DLC will be more like a new game.

I think this delay must be the result of obstacles that cannot be overcome using the Cobra engine. While the player stats/achievements, stellar forge will be carried over, we will potentially get a new game with a new engine, that takes advantage of new gen-console hardware and hopefully RTX features (yes, I think Elite could be the best game to benefit from ray tracing). Also, current assets will certainly need to be remastered if 'space legs' is in the cards.

Which also means will only get assets for Elite Dangerous that can be used in the new game, a bit like how Rockstar keeps GTA5 relevant - new cars, weapons and cosmetics. And probably this is why FDev wants to focus on the story line and in-game events to keep ED relevant.

Short-mid term this news is a disaster... long term however, the news are very exciting, unless FDev decides to drop VR support (no VR, no buy!).

2018 was presented as a stop-gap year of QoL updates before we get more paid content.
The crumb of marketing message was a hint that their roadmap was -for some reason- turned upside down. I wish we knew why this happened, but I think this is a plausible explanation.

If you don't want to read about speculation, why open these threads?

Any of you guys ever played Gran Turismo? When it comes to being slow devs, no one beats Polyphony. Not even M$.

Also, I started VR space escapism with EVE: Valkyrie, and i must say that FD seems to be a little bit more enthusiastic than CCP Games.

I'm very curious about what they decided to do, but totally understand why they need to keep their cards close to their vests so another game company doesn't steal their thunder, so to speak.

That said, with a game engine over 4 years old, it would be cool if they could revamp it to allow planets with more life and atmospheres, and a first person walking mode like found in SC.

And having a team of graphic artists working on making all assets 4K beautiful would be cool too as some don't hold up on close inspection.

But yeah, if what they are working on is not VR compatible I'd be quite disappointed too.

That is what I am inclined to believe. I think they had always hoped to keep the original Cobra Engine, but have realised that it just isn't up to the task in relation to the more complicated atmospheric effects (not so sure about walking around). To be frank, if this is the case then I wish that Bethesda would take a leaf out Frontier's books......'cause they reckon that they can make Elder Scrolls 6 with the same engine that they used for Skyrim & Fallout 4!

Yes, apparently, Bethsesda is going with the same engine for Starfield as well. It's kind of disheartening considering how recycled Fallout '76 looked and overall the rpg mechanics had been progressively dumbed down for successive games in both the Fallout and ElderScrolls franchises. At least Frontier looks to be investing in new directions and pushing the boundaries in ED for the future.

You mean, you have faith that this is happening.

That's faith, as in, a belief unsupported by much in the way of evidence.

Sure, they could be porting the whole game to a completely rewritten engine.

They could also be receiving instructions from Gorl Lorlsgogoth, Putrid Goat-Lord of the Seventh Tier of Pandemonium.

When you think about it, it's much easier to make up any old nonsense that comes into your head than it is to talk honestly about things as they really are. Just ask Derek Smart.
