Latest official news (6 December 2021) about Odyssey on consoles:

Do you have any information on Odyssey on consoles?
There currently isn't any new information to share in terms of Odyssey on consoles. We hear you, as soon as we do have something worth sharing with you, we will. At the moment, work is focused on PC optimisation.

When is the next Development Update post?
You can expect the next Elite Development Update in the new year.

In other words, Odyssey has not been cancelled on consoles (yet?), but the focus on PC version updates will continue for the foreseeable future.

I would expect that starting from next year (January maybe?) to switch focus from PC to Consoles

Really curious about the next Dev Update in January 2022

Have to admit I'm not that optimistic when all this new stuff hits it's bound to cause issues, also there still talking about update 10. I think if it was only a case of waiting till January they would have dropped hints by now. More likely gonna be April onwards and I say April very loosely lol

at this point, we won't see it until May 2023 even if it's finished. as that's when the new tax year starts in the UK. they were never planning to release the console version in this tax year, they thought odyssey on PC and JPE2 would do a lot more and spliting the console version of odyssey would cut the tax bill.

I don't expect that, given the state of the PC version. They're still improving and balancing it. I wouldn't expect any news on consoles until next autumn. By that time it will probably be decided whether to bother with consoles at all, if it's worth technically and financially, or drop them completely. I wouldn't be surprised if they did, "officially" too. Given the PC version's progress I'm not optimistic this will ever work on consoles. They don't seem to be able to get it together.

They've said the same things about PSVR, Crossplay and custom HUD colours in the past.

They've not been able to close the PC Horizons/Odyssey divide... which is without doubt the most relevant step (or leap :D ) they've to make before going forward on the console side. Without such "merge" of the galaxies, they'll need to maintain eventually 6 galaxy versions of the game, vs. the 4 current, so it just looks economically not sustainable.

Console can't / won't handle oddyysey without some major downgrades to the requirements. Look at all the pc players with thousands of pounds worth of PC struggling with oddyysey.

I personally think they will scrap it for consoles or at least have a poorly downgraded version of it atleast for the xbox one. The next gen may be able to handle it but probably at rubbish FPS

I've a fairly modest PC which didn't cost thousands of pounds and is bested by my £350 PS5 - on paper at least (and in practise, comparing cross platform games like Destiny 2).

It runs Odyssey fine.

Yes indeed, elite looks like SC 😂😂

this game didn’t need the power that you are referring here, it’s a pure lack of optimization.

I doubt you'll see Oddy on previous gen Xbox One (it is 2013 vintage hardware, however you look at it), they are getting long in the tooth, but the series S & X should be able to run it comfortably.

The lowest common denominator is not the OG Xbox and PS4. The lowest common denominator is in the PC arena. There are people running dual and quad core CPUs, there are even systems that run this game on the Ryzen APUs - or those laptops with integrated graphics cards.

When people are talking about it being too powerful for "the consoles" they are forgetting that even those old consoles are more powerful than some of the potato hardware that PC players run the game on. Frontier have to support those too, and do so by tuning the game's graphics settings down accordingly. No reason they can't do the same, even for the OG consoles. Dice have managed it with BF2042 for example.

Frontier don't have to support any PCs that are below the minimum specifications for Odyssey. That's why there are minimum specifications for games.

If you have links to people playing Odyssey well on hardware that is equivalent to the XBox and PS4, which are below minimum specs, I would genuinely be interested in seeing it.

Are the minimum specs for Odyssey correct now then? Originally they were the same as Horizons, which are below OG console specifications.

I'm not sure what you mean by correct, but they are listed on their website. Before the Alpha was released they said it would run no the same specifications as Horizons, but that was changed when the Alpha was launched.
