launch from stations

To add to the posts, look at your screen, a diamond shape will appear showing you a ship if it is infront of the entry/exit window, also remember the traffic light system, enter/exit on the green side.

It IS NOT a traffic light system but a port/starboard lights system. Please stop propagating this myth!

The green and red lights are related to maritime tradition.
You are after all piloting a ship. When piloting a ship you show certain colours. Red for port, green for starboard. (Port [4 letters]=left [four letters], Green [ five letters]= Right [five letters]) so the Red light should be on your left and the green on your right when docking.

Hi rincewindcymru,

The rule is "Red, Right, Returning". Red on the right, green on the left when returning from sea. Or in the case space.

I must say a lot of us use the Green light side, but actually, I've read somewhere that the green/flashing red lights are used for colourblind ppl. NPCs do support the previous, since they tend to get in/out of the station from the middle of the letterbox, especially the bigger ships.

but, yes I do always "use" the "green side" too :)

That is correct the lights are not there for entry directions, but for the color blind, that is why one flashes.

First of All, I assume you might boost or use high speed while approaching or leaving the station...I think that's against the pilot rules, you should have a max speed of like 60-90 so that you can avoid being hit from unskilled (npcs) pilots.
...

Wait... What? There are pilot rules?

IT would seem to conflict with my smuggling code (avoid scans at all costs), luckily, new players are in small ships, so I'm all good!

Z...

Where do you lot keep getting the traffic lights idea from. They're port/starboard indicators for orientation, red means left and green means right, as in you keep your respective wingtips facing those and you'll come in facing "up" to oncoming pilots. Fly down the middle and give way to bigger ships, that's starport protocol.

Best advice i have, buy a Type 9 then fly through everything...

It is not a port/starboard system either (since that depends on which way up you are). Stop propagating this myth!

Dev have confirmed that ALL it is is an orienting aid. If you always enter with the lights in the same orientation (whichever one you choose), then the numbered docking bays will always be in the same place. That is ALL it is.

Red/green = port/starboard. For orientation you need to know which side is which. Don't disagree just for the sake of disagreeing, man.

Keep green light to your right, red light to your left. They're only there for orientation.
As for "rules" just follow the same procedure that the NPCs follow: incoming flights take precedence over outgoing flights! But, at the same time, there is no "moving backward", even if we can, so an outbound ship that's already clearing the forcefield takes precedence over an incoming flight.

Take any "stick to the green side" rules with a grain of salt, and follow them at your own risk. Yes, two Cobra's fit next to eachother in that gate, but two Lakons are a different matter. Better safe than sorry, and follow NPC rules. Would've been nice, if there had been seperate entry and departure gates opposite one another though.

Having docked hundreds of times and not crashing into other ships, maybe the fault lies elsewhere? You have radar that tells you everything, you can look out your canope and see what is coming and you have a throttle to prevent bumping in to them. Not only can you evade bumping into them, you should. If not please go to solo mode and practice before joining open. Btw: screw the green lights. Stay in the middle when docking and you can basically roll perfectly onto every pad.

Well stated! This is the truth. Simply wait your turn or go through very carefully at slow speed!

That's what just jammed up my Clipper into the airlock a while ago. I was already 75% the way in when he shot(it was quick for a T9) from the inside coming out, I had one behind me so I had to try to throttle it and caught the corner. :(
