Launcher freezes up... Can't Update

the game will launch Legacy, but Odyssey and Horizons both give me an "UPGRADE" button. When I select it, the launcher freezes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game, same problem. How do I fix this?

How long are you waiting for the launcher to respond? I've had instances where it's taken over 10 minutes from the button press for the update process to begin.

Check the task manager. In my case, the Launcher and MS Defender were battling it out over disk access for a subjective quarter of an hour - and that was with an M.2 SSD....

perfectly normal for the launcher to appear as though it is doing nothing.
walk away and let it do its thing
most especially when a new update like this and many people are using the bandwidth up..

Hows that normal.... Never did it 5 - 10 weeks ago.... Been playing since 2015 with no launcher problems... FDEV break the game with every update.

I beg to disagree. Over the years, for me there have been occasions where the upgrade took ages to actually start - however, in the main that delay was very short. The "preparing for upgrade" activity (or apparent lack thereof) I would suggest is a traffic / network issue, not a case of "breaking the game".

Don't get me wrong, for sure F D do "break the game" to one degree or another with every update, sometimes catastrophically and some which are still in the game years down the line. FD can be incredibly frustrating

If you look at the task manager while the Launcher seems to be doing nothing, this doesn't look (entirely) like an FDEV issue to me :):
  • the Launcher is a disguised Internet Explorer window, so there's a lot of Microsoft influence here
  • what is (seems to be) happening while the Launcher is looking inactive is that the Launcher is fighting with Windows antivirus for disk access

So, basically any Windows update in those last 10 weeks could have led to that change in behaviour. One of the most likely suspects is MS's end of support for IE.

I installed for another waste-of-time test last weekend. It took just shy of 5 minutes for the progress bar to show. Normal behavior based on my experience.
