Newcomer / Intro Launcher or Steam?

Hey all,

I run ED via the ED Launcher at present but would like to keep everything tied up in Steam if possible. Is it possible/advisable to delete the ED Launcher and transfer to Steam?

Thanks

Andy

Hi, In steam under the games tab there is the option to add non steam games to my library. Ive never attempted to move my games so if you want to try it good luck

Aye nothing stopping you switching to the Steam version it all links to the same account so you don't lose anything besides having to redownload the game.

But all the Steam link does is launch the launcher anyway so it doesn't remove the launcher step at all.

The only real downside I think is if you buy Elite related stuff through Steam, Valve take a cut and so Frontier get less money. But you can still use steam and just buy skins and whatnot direct from Frontier anyway so that's easy to avoid if it bothers you.

Remember this moment.
You will go back to it and curse yourself every time you're trying to buy a new season or update the game after reinstall.

I personally would* touch Steam even if they were paying me.
(just a personal opinion, but since you asked...)

edit: *wouldn't, of course

I bought mine on Steam, so I've always used Steam. It runs just fine from there, and so far I've had no issues with updates. I had to do a bit of hokey-pokey to get the current Beta working with my install, because it doesn't like to upgrade when launched from Steam.

You do get tied to Steam, though. Even in-game purchases go through your Steam log-in.

I have 90% of my games in Steam, though, so this bothers me not.

I've had both and ultimately uninstalled the steam version because it was cluttering up the disk with stuff I don't really want. It had some value because of time played, but that data has been in game for some time, now.

I've wondered about this - I play via Steam, is there any way out?

If you have the game registered under your Frontier account, I think you can still go to your account, downloadable products, and download the launcher installer, install it and log into it with Frontier account. But honestly, if you bought the game via steam, I am not sure you even have a Frontier account.

I bought another commander in the recent Steam sale. I needed a F D account (and separate email addy) so as to activate the keys for horizons and commander pack (yeah that sale). I launch it from the desktop but that also loads Steam, the difference is you select the E D version from the launcher not from Steam popup.

I don't know if you can download and activate outside steam - have not tried it - am keeping this via Steam for the "separation" between commanders it gives me.

Yes, you still need a Frontier account. And yes you can launch the game directly without going through Steam. I do this sometimes, but I prefer using Steam. It's up to you.

Thanks all

Most of my games are on Steam... Just a bit of OCD in wanting it all together. Although I am happy to use the ED launcher. People slate Steam but its far better than Origin or Uplay that I got a for a couple of other games!!!

Oh, I'm sure about that.
It's probably just me being old and fixated on physical media. I wouldn't feel like I own the game, if I just downloaded it via some digital distribution.

All I know are all the threads here, made by people dealing with difficulties when comes to upgrading and registering Elite bought via Steam. No biggie. I am sure it works for most people.

And to your original question, because I think we somewhat forgot to answer it - If you bought Elite from Frontier store, then if you log into your account, there, you can request the Steam key, which you then can use to activate the game in a Steam client.

.

I have to agree that the initial setup when I bought my Steam version was tortuous in the extreme. Happily I came across a FAQ on the Frontier Support website that steered me through - it was still horrendous - although the validation of Horizons and the Commander pack thingie were straightforward after that.

I await the 2.2 / 1.7 update with some trepidation after what you say. [downcast]

I'm just being grumpy towards Steam. I hope you guys will be okay, of course.

I used to hate the idea of having the Steam app running all the time - as a FlightSim user I like to pare down all processes to the absolute minimum. However I have to admit that I am quite enjoying having the Steam music player able to come up as an overlay in E D (and not in windowed mode) so I can swap between Bruch, Paloma Faith and Royskopp for example as the whim takes me. I do wish F D would stick a media player in our cockpits.

To listen to the Lave Radio directly via the ship's sound systems would be a truly amazing experience.
In the meantime, I'm personally using Voice Attack for that. Astra is actually a pretty decent DJ. :)

Now that would be a good idea !

Lave Radio is the only one I cannot connect to. I always get an offline message what ever I try. I have at least 15 other channels working Galnet, Sidewinder, Hutton Orbital etc but not Lave Radio
