Newcomer / Intro Leading or trailing fire mode

Please, could someone be so kind and explain me the difference between leading and trailing weapon sights? I got a multicannon gimballed and just do not get it how to aim correctly and when to fire, pure luck now firing all the time (some projectiles will hit eventually...). The manual is quite short on this. Thanks in advance!

One puts the aim point in front of the vessel and you need to move your pipper out to it in order to hit the target. The other adjusts you sights so the pipper shows the impact point, so you put the pipper where you want your weapons to hit. If you don't see a target box in front of the enemy, then your pipper is the aiming point so just put it on the target and fire.
