League of Legends creators discuss toxic player behaviour

Not sure how much people are aware of LoL, but it's well-regarded in the industry as having some of the best online community support and management, with a lot of attention payed to sealing abuses, balancing the game and ensuring a healthy and inclusive play experience. All relevant to Elite, in my books! They've recently done a video which gives some great insights into how "toxic player behaviour" has a bad effect on the game, and what they do to help reduce this:

I think Frontier could do with taking some notes and trying to consider some of these issues ahead of time. There's a lot of worry on the boards about griefers and such, but these guys show that though it can be a problem it's not an insurmountable one.

Taking off my Frontier hat here, I don't think League of Legends should be used as a positive example of how to manage your online game community. In my opinion League of Legends has one of the most toxic multiplayer environments I've ever experienced; bad enough to make me completely turn my back on the game, despite quite enjoying the core experience.

My view is that Riot certainly don't do enough to address the issue of flaming and griefing in-game and it alienates a large portion of their potential fan-base because of it.

Ever since they have implemented the honor system, lol has become one of the friendliest communities I ever saw. <3

I just love that you are being rewarded for being friendly, helpful and helping your team... all MMOs should do that.

I don't know if the community has changed that much, actually, but then again, I stopped playing LoL a couple of months ago... what I do agree with, though is some form of "honor" system for E D, not only punishing the toxic player (which, basically is the criminal system), but also rewarding the helpful/friendly player.

Speaking of toxic and undesirable behaviour, including those who cheat and abuse the system, why is your link Darren in the original post to Gamasutra and yet when quoted by Jeshu4ever the link is actually to a hacking site for LoL ?

Your OP Darren was not edited after posting (no edit message below it) implies yours is genuine, which makes me question Jeshu4ever's post.

Something is amiss ...

Wierd and sorta pointless.

I have already said, toxic players who cheat must be placed for some number of days in the "Ross 128" stellar system who as everyone knows, is a federal prison. Can never come out

:p

While I know several people who in LoL who agree what Ashley said, they have done lot of research on this and they have interesting findings. Can agree or not, such research is rarity in gaming industry, as no one wants screw around with your core player base.

So essentially if you put emphasis on publicly ridicule of toxic players, and push message about working together and achieving more, you get decrease in their activity, but you can't eliminate their behavior en masse.
