O is the hottest and it goes down from there . Within each letter, it's broken down further by numbers. 0 is the hottest and 9 is the coolest.
So a M5 is hotter than an M6. The Roman Numerals indicate what kind of star it is. a main star, V, a kind of giant (I-IV)
If you know this, you can get a pretty good idea of what the star is going to be like just by checking the galaxy map before hand.
