Learning from Truck Simulations

Having been away from ED for months I was wondering if there was anything worth returning for yet? I have seen some of the newsletters about Thargoids returning etc but that doesnt look that exciting at the moment.

Well I have been playing American Truck Simulator a lot lately and you know what makes that game great - one thing is listening to the American radio as you play, really makes it immersive. I was wondering if that sort of thing would improve this game from being the grindfest it often is? What about having a radio you can listen to whilst you fly around? How would that work in this game - would you need a local station for each system? Would need local news, features and music. I doubt that would work but its worth thinking about. There must be something Frontier can do to improve the immersion.

Certainly there are other things Frontier could learn from in that ATS game though - what about cargo tugs or trailers where you are pulling a massive line of cargo behind you? Or attachments to you ship for cargo that makes your ship much larger and heavier - trying to land with that sort of thing could be really tricky.

And then theres the refuelling and rest period in ATS - why dont you have to rest in this game? Surely you cant go on indefinitely. And how could they make refuelling more interesting? Maybe making a fuel shortage or start refuelling a heck of a lot more difficult?

and then there is the scenery or lack of it in this game that makes driving around in ATS so interesting. How to improve the simple jump, jump, refuel, jump jump refuel slog? Surely there must be something they can do to make you have to visit some scenery to refuel - why no for example make star refuelling extrmely hazardous but gas giant refuelling much easier - then more people might travel deeper into the systems themselves.

There NEEDS to be more immersion in this game, more reason for visiting other areas than just constant jumps from star to star. More tricky landings and routine operations, more emergencies like fuel leaks or damage by micrometeorites than makes you abort your plans, need for rest and planning your route more carefully to refuel etc. IMO the whole game is far too easy and dull, there is no skill required to play. That needs to change. When a simple Truck Sim is far more immersive than this, supposedly the pinnacle of open world space simulation gaming, then there is something wrong somewhere.

While everyone agrees something would improve ED, pretty sure most would consider 'mandatory rests like real truckers' to be exactly the stuff we do not need. Gas giant refueling is something they want to add, but with actual 'cloud' generation. The biggest problem IMHO is that you see ED as 'space truck simulator', whereas in Elite series trading is just an excuse to run into combat. :p As for radio, have you tried Lave Radio?

I mean, it sounds great, but that would be a huge undertaking. Games like GTA and ETS can simply rely on existing songs for their IG radio, but I doubt today's hits will still be around in 3303 CE. Frontier would have to create the whole thing from scratch.

Lol, don't tell that to the newbs who struggle with landing at an outpost.

And yes, if you just fly around and play "truck sim in space" you don't need much skill...

Try something different for a change, go for combat, PvE or PvP, you will see that there is still skill involved.

Radio-wise on PC you can have another window open and listen to Lave Radio or Sidewinder radio channels. Consoles I have never tried accessing a web streaming service whilst playing a game so don't know if that works for them.

The local chat could be enhanced with less of wedding barge chatter and how great a Beluga is to more of local traders confirming price of commodities in high demand at specific stations. Bounty Hunters discussing locations of Res sites in system (as these don't appear on nav list until you are closer to them).

When systems are in War, rather than silly phrases being chanted, some chatter that indicates how the engagement is progressing e.g. "Legion of FuD is gaining ground in the combat zones around Artichoke 5 C"

Adding these as audio is a more challenging undertaking, although if a decent text to speech plugin was co-opted that could give different voices that may be interesting. the worry is that most if this would be turned off by players after they heard it twice.

T2S is attrocious for this, IMHO. Its great for disabled people, dont get me wrong, but it sounds so unnatural it would really reduce the quality of this game far too much. There is a for-sale mod that adds this to the game (where all text converdations are turned to voices) and its honestly worse than just text. Again, IMHO. We're many years away from convincing t2s.

Hauling nothing else than a full cutters worth of imperial sl.. erm skittish stock I've yet to be interdicted or attacked during my trading runs.
Trading in itself is uneventful enough, I'd gladly receive a message by a station NPC that requests a certain type of goods within a timeframe and pays 1.5x of my most recent trade for my efforts.
There's plenty of things FD can do to improve trading. They just have to do it.

You had me until "American Radio"

Peronally I prefer Mexican.

Even if you play a good bit of combat, the truck comparison still stands, just gets a bit more Mad Max - with the exceptions of the arena FPS and League of Legends playstyles which tbh don't primarily interact with Elite universe as such.

Sounds like interesting additions. I like the idea of environmental hazards and shifting conditions. Normally i would object, as ships for months in deep space would die of attrition - but now with the limpets able to do repairs it might be just doable
