Learning to fly....

Second post - please be kind! I already asked this question on the Introductions forum but it probably wasn't the right place. I've had a quick play on the single player alpha build and am enormously impressed, but flying is very different to the original Elite. Has anyone written a guide for people familiar with Elite but new to ED, explaining the use of yaw, side thrusters, etc? I've searched the forums but not found anything yet.

Welcome to the forums and E: D :)

As HaB says, Youtube gives you a great insight into what the ships are capable of and how they move around.

Essentially the thrusters are all part of the flight assist (on) making you fly like a plane in space with flight assist off it flies with Newtonian Physics (Shhh!! :)) Thankfully Frontier (with flight assist on) have emulated the controls and flight model just (in my opinion) like the original Elite.

You manually use the thrusters to move left and right (like strafe) and vertically up and down. Yaw is rolling the ship on its axis, so rolling left and right like dipping your wings, or 'nodding' forward and back.

Hope that helps a little, best thing to do is get out there flying to experience it :)
