Newcomer / Intro Learnt the painful Way

Well since I picked this game up, (which by the way I enjoy a lot) I have always played in open.
Met some nice cmdrs on my travels.
Until tonight that is...I had spent a couple of hours mining some platinum, then jumped into my Viper and headed to one of the Engineers... While I had just got docking position landing gear down..some not very nice git opens up and blasts me to bits with the comment (haha noob)

Not going to mention the guys name, but looks like no more open play for me, when I'm off to see an engineer...looks like another 2 hours mining now...grrrr

[sad]

Thats too bad. I am new too and I only play in open.

I have been lucky not to have been griefed yet. But I have not tried mining yet. I would love to hear how common griefing is. What is the advantage to playing OPEN. If you have no friends there don't seem to be any.

Pretty much. Sorry you had to learn the hard way, but in the future you may want to make sure you drop from open when going to certain hubs that tend to attract idiots. Those include engineers, starting zones, systems hosting a community goal, and powerplay chokepoints, and notorious player pirate faction's home systems. I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of.

Remember, the best way to grief a griefer, is in Solo.

Stay safe commander.

thanks for the tips Don Alvarez,

Learnt a bitter lesson tonight, so will use solo mode in the future for visiting engineers, and the CG and powerplay choke points. I know its a risk but I prefer the Openplay mode..

Ahh well ive vented my frustration out in a High res site,so time to jump into the mining ship and go find 8 platinum!(again)

thanks again for the tips

I started (and still am) in solo because of immature crap like this. I`ve had enough great games ruined in the past by people like this, especially when you`re trying to get started. So I had a pretty good idea what to expect here. MP is a nightmare unless you join a squad or go in with friends which for a lot of us, just isn`t convenient. When I do go Open, I will be well and truly ready to give as much as I get.

And to be honest, Solo is really good, the AI, for the most part does everything to make it a good Single Player experience. :) However, be advised, you can be ambushed too, though not in a station.

Unfortunately there are some people who just want to see the Universe burn, and taking out new Players is just a start. However, there are also Players who want to help new Players get a better start (check the links in my signature to see what I attempt to do), so do not be put off from playing in Open (although I would stay away from known hotspots such as Community Goals and Engineer bases, as these are places that attract the pyromaniacs).

Well done for not naming that person, as Naming and Shaming is frowned upon by FDev.

Hello, commander.
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. But like you said - it was just one occasion. It would be sad if one idiot drove you away from interacting with other people.
Like you already, at least partially, found out, most of the people in the game are awesome.

I'm not trying to convince you to return to Open just now. You can stay in Solo mode until you've created a comfortable money cushion and are a bit more confident in your self-defense. But don't put us all into one sack. :)
There is one idiot for every ten thousand of nice people.

That being said, idiots tend to concentrate around places they are sure they will find a victim. Community goals, starter systems (particularly venomous) and engineer bases are very often plagued by them (You can always visit those in Solo, even later on), so to untrained eye it may seem there's a lot of them, but once you're here long enough, you'll start recognizing the same names over and over.

So stay in solo, for now, if it makes you feel comfortable, but don't rob yourself of a whole world of fun and pleasant interaction. (for example teaming up with three friends and whipping that sorry sod out of there) :)

Good luck, what ever you choose to do! o7

Im not giving up on openplay, with the good advise i have recieved i will switch to solo for when i visit an engineer etc then switch back to open.
As i found out i have met some good guys out in the black, and it will continue hopefully.
Lesson learnt and time to move onwards and upwards

Good attitude. Repped

HI OP, plenty of player groups out there Mobious is large, not 100% safe but pretty close ! If you decide to Don a lab coat and experiment, then join Canonn, we also have a PG it now it has over 400 members. Fly safe commander o7

I'm glad to hear you'll be staying in open generally. Having had the experience of course, you can always treat player populated areas as "extremely hazardous" (it's an option other than going to solo). This is what I tend to do, as I don't go into solo but stay constantly wary of any hollow contact on the scanner if I don't know them. I find this quite exciting (hand-shaking with friendlies is an art) as bear in mind, you don't 100% have to be at an engineer's base, to bump into a griefer.

What this player did to you, sucks basically. I tend to think of them either as a kind of uncontrolled mafia murder-squad, to be avoided. Or a spoiled brat (Caligula) who stole the keys to Daddy's space ship.

Just be aware is all, playing in Open is more exciting for the precise reason that unexpected things happen. As long as you have plenty of credit reserves then dying is actually part of the risk/entertainment. Being called a noob in the process isn't though I'd report the player for that personally.

If it makes you feel any better the other day my Cutter was interdicted by some NPC's and they pulled me out of supercruise so fast I couldn't submit it was near instant. Then by the time I'd stopped spinning 2 elite NPCs (I assume anacondas) already had 2 rings off my shields and my FSD couldn't recharge in time for an escape. So an 800M cr ship with 600t of cargo goes boom with really not a lot I could do about it... Solo can be dangerous too when that RNG and AI has it in for you your in trouble I don't care how experienced you are . Yes I did a rebuy it cost me 25M cr + cargo + time at the end of the day I just chalk it up to pushing my luck too far, that and the 30M cr bounty I had might have had something to do with it lol.

Laughing and calling him a noob when he made an unprovoked surprise ambush. I think that`s the nub of it. I`m not some snowflake, but that kind of insult is just spit for spite`s sake and what hits the hardest.

Yeah, I used to play 100% open but now use Mobius when going into areas likely to attract idiots. Pirates I don't mind, actually enjoy sometimes, but PvP pirating is pretty broken at the moment so that doesn't really happen anymore. If I could be bothered with the effort I'd engineer my ships to be more survivable and go back to open but I get very limited play time now and don't see why I should be pushed by others to spend my hours grinding engineers. Mobius gives the benefit of still seeing other players while avoiding the idiots and, unfortunately, the player pirates.

I was playing in solo-play last night and was killed twice by NPC's. the first had a ship with two fighters, the second time It was a ship that was way over-powered as well. my ship is the viper mkIV and I lasted both times less then 30 seconds.
for some reason they appeared directly behind me and I never got a chance to even turn to face them.
both attacks were done as I was leaving the same station....had to log out for a while :(

That sounds like some very determined mission-specific NPC. Have you recently taken on some high-ranking missions, which you, perhaps, didn't complete?

Engineer places (especially the starter unlocks like Dweller or Farseer) are bugged and exploited by Gankers quite frequently.

One of my buddies encountered some Corvette camper ganking departing traffic over and over - with the bugged Engineer Base not caring one bit.

That's just what happens if critical issues aren't addressed immediately with a Hotfix, but left alone over several months (!), costing likely many thousands of innocent CMDRs their Ships.
Unfortunately, Frontier is frequently putting such critical issues on minimum Priority instead of Hotfixing them top priority as they should.

Anyway, survival all boils down to frequently monitoring the Bug Reports and Discussion Forums to identify all the unpatched Bugs and Exploits.
And in some Ship types, physical limitations just happen to make survival impossible vs. maximum-modded Ships setting up traps by exploiting the known bugs.

Not running into these places in Open is then the logical choice, although 1st hand witnessing the Exploits offers a very valuable learning to understand how they work - and how to avoid/counter them if possible.
If I have very precious stuff to lose or needed to make tons of bunny-hops to even reach a distant Engineer, I'm likely not in the mood to mess around with/get messed around by others anyway.
I've often found myself docked at an ENG Base in Open, but even with tons of traffic hardly ever heard anyone even say a single line of chat. Thus, other Player presence there is typically of no benefit.
In the few cases I had leftover Engineer Cargo I could have given away, basically none of the hailed even responded (likely in ENG Menu Pages, so they don't even see the Text incoming) *shrugs*

PS.
Remember System Authority didn't even show up from V1.4 all the way until V2.1 eventually fixed this Critical error almost 6 months too late.

This is why I tend not to do early access or anything like that with any game, no matter its potential. I just go away and wait a few years then go back and research to see if the thing is 90% finished yet. Then I`ll put my cash to it if it is. I also really don`t like playing games that are still being `made` (early access). it`s like getting a watercolour painting that the artist has only completed 70% of and you gotta wait while he slowly fills in the rest. Dunno how games get away with, I certainly can`t!

Oops. rant. Sorry.

go find 8 platinum!(again)

If you only need Platinum - you can often find canisters of it on a planetary surface, just driving around in the SRV (usually protected by Skimmers though, so if you decide to take them on, just take out the WANTED ones....)

Even if they aren't - planets usually have their own jurisdiction. Being wanted on the surface doesn't mean you're wanted in the whole system. ;)

(there are exceptions, of course, like if the skimmers belong to the ruling faction that also own a space station.)
