Leaving my ship in space

So I just recently started doing some exploration doing lots of scanning and finding new planets and stars. I want to start exploring systems far from civilized space, but I'm unsure if my ship is safe if I can't make it back to a station when I'm done playing. If I exit Super Cruise and log out of the game, can my ship still be attacked by NPC's or other players? Or do i vanish from the live galaxy when I log out?

You are correct, just park it up
As long as you not leave it in a asteroid field or something crazy like that.

Once you log off your ship does remain live in the galaxy for so many seconds, I forget how long maybe 10-15 secs but don't hold me to that

After that it's perfectly safe until your return

Just to be safe, also fly out of the orbital plane of the system... I remember reading posts of people who's ship had exploded and the only explanation other than a bug was being hit by an orbiting planet as the background sim chugged along.

Slim chance, but why risk it :)

I remember feeling the same for a long time when I started playing Elite. It just didn't feel comfortable to leave the ship "hanging" there in deep space. :) But in reality it's perfectly safe, nothing can happen to it. The game saves your exact coordinates in the current system and will spawn you back right there when you log in the next time. And in time you will get accustomed to it. The game also loads in much faster when your ship is in open space instead of a station for example.
