I know people are banging on about Oculus Rift, but OR is only an option if you have all your controls at your fingertips & to have that you need a HOTAS combo, the only problem is they are all right handed, if you're left handed with stick control, you’re pretty much screwed.
Being a leftie who uses his joystick in his left hand, I thought about TrackIR, but thought it wouldn’t be any good, turning my head, whilst trying to keep my eyes on the screen, I didn’t like the idea, thinking the range of motion would be self defeating, so put TrackIR out of mind.
After watching a lot of YouTube videos on ED & how effortlessly people were looking about their cockpits, keeping their eyes on a tight pitching foe, yet getting no where myself with such endeavours with my HAT switch. I began to look into TrackIR again, taking a closer look with YouTube videos that used picture in picture (watching the user’s range of motion with what was occurring in said game).
I took the plunge & bought TrackIR 5, I know, I know, I could of knocked up a NoTrackIR setup, but I just wanted something to work out of the bag, for ease of use. It arrived this morning & I’ve got to say, I’m impressed, it’s exceeded my expectations, the range of motion on the screen to what you actually have to do is excellent: (In Reality is an approximation)
In Game------In Reality
90 degrees = 11.25 degrees
180 degrees = 22.5 degrees
A right angled turn in any direction (yaw & pitch) is easily achieved with 11.25 degrees, an action you would more than likely perform in a game. A complete 180 degrees owl like turnabout, something your wouldn’t be doing realistically anyway, is still comfortably achieved.
ED, brilliant, Euro Truck Simulator 2 I bought yesterday on Steam, I can’t imagine how that game could be played with touch view control. I use the Track Clip for a baseball cap, hearing bad things about the Pro sensor.
But my only bug-bear is, even though the cap Track Clip seems quite sturdy, I’d like to buy a spare, yet the only place I can get one from is the US, which means shipping costs & being shafted with import taxes, speaking from previous experience, the import taxes will probably be more costly then the bloody clip. I’ll more than likely have to knock one up myself.
Left Hand = Thrustmaster T16000M
Right Hand = Logitech G13
View Tracking = TrackIR 5 with standard Track Clip
Can of Beer at my side = I can pick up because I’m not blinded by bloody Oculus Rift.
