Left Handed Stick = TrackIR

I know people are banging on about Oculus Rift, but OR is only an option if you have all your controls at your fingertips & to have that you need a HOTAS combo, the only problem is they are all right handed, if you're left handed with stick control, you’re pretty much screwed.

Being a leftie who uses his joystick in his left hand, I thought about TrackIR, but thought it wouldn’t be any good, turning my head, whilst trying to keep my eyes on the screen, I didn’t like the idea, thinking the range of motion would be self defeating, so put TrackIR out of mind.

After watching a lot of YouTube videos on ED & how effortlessly people were looking about their cockpits, keeping their eyes on a tight pitching foe, yet getting no where myself with such endeavours with my HAT switch. I began to look into TrackIR again, taking a closer look with YouTube videos that used picture in picture (watching the user’s range of motion with what was occurring in said game).

I took the plunge & bought TrackIR 5, I know, I know, I could of knocked up a NoTrackIR setup, but I just wanted something to work out of the bag, for ease of use. It arrived this morning & I’ve got to say, I’m impressed, it’s exceeded my expectations, the range of motion on the screen to what you actually have to do is excellent: (In Reality is an approximation)

In Game------In Reality
90 degrees = 11.25 degrees
180 degrees = 22.5 degrees

A right angled turn in any direction (yaw & pitch) is easily achieved with 11.25 degrees, an action you would more than likely perform in a game. A complete 180 degrees owl like turnabout, something your wouldn’t be doing realistically anyway, is still comfortably achieved.

ED, brilliant, Euro Truck Simulator 2 I bought yesterday on Steam, I can’t imagine how that game could be played with touch view control. I use the Track Clip for a baseball cap, hearing bad things about the Pro sensor.

But my only bug-bear is, even though the cap Track Clip seems quite sturdy, I’d like to buy a spare, yet the only place I can get one from is the US, which means shipping costs & being shafted with import taxes, speaking from previous experience, the import taxes will probably be more costly then the bloody clip. I’ll more than likely have to knock one up myself.

Left Hand = Thrustmaster T16000M
Right Hand = Logitech G13
View Tracking = TrackIR 5 with standard Track Clip
Can of Beer at my side = I can pick up because I’m not blinded by bloody Oculus Rift. :D

A track clip? You mean this bent piece of metal with reflective tabs that I have no use for?

It's an artistic piece, and monetarily worthless so exempt from duty.

PM me if you want it for shipping :)

I use TrackIR and a DelanClip (which is a brilliant bit of kit, much better than the shoddy pro clip TrackIR make).

And yes, you don't need to turn your head 90 degrees for the game to look round 90 degrees ;) I have mine set up just right, turn about 10 degrees :)

Also a left handed gamer, but long ago trained myself to fly using a right handed joystick. Currently using a Microsoft force feedback 2 joystick but will be moving to a Logitech G940 Hotas.

Don't even think about the fact that are made for right handed people now days and like the fact the my main hand is employed on the keyboard where I have more controls that need to be reached.

While I would love to get hold of a Oculus Rift when it goes retail, build and using the DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

Works very well and a lot cheaper than a TrackIR, but also a fun self build project.

Using TrackIR, H'ED' over the Oculus does as you say have the advantage that you can see your drink of choice, and running them with a surround screen setup also looks great. But a big plus is that you have a chance to see the person who is about to post a youtube clip of you looking stupid cause your eyes are covered and cant hear them with headphones on.

I am using TrackClip Pro can't say nothing bad about it. I do not have red lights in front of me and I do not need to wear a cap, which makes me uncomfortable. I am using it with headband.

Thanks for the offer mate, but the custom's tax would take a bigger bite out of my butt, than buying it locally, I'll more than likely knock one up myself, cheers anyway. ;)

I like this DelanClip option, it could be a good idea, at the moment I'm kind of portable, with gaming laptop & foldaway headphones, but it's good to know if I become more static with my set up. It's just at the moment it's one less thing to do to get set up, a quick baseball cap to the head, I've already got to get out controllers with collapsible supporting stool, not to mention laptop on coffee table with TrackIR, having thrown out my old clapped out tower.

DelanClip with headband, now that maybe just the way to go. :)

TrackIR

Hey Robo,
I highly recommend TrackIR. It's effortless to use and you forget you are wearing it. As mentioned above, you set it up so you only turn your head a small number of degrees, say 10 degrees left to 'look' 90 degrees left and so on.

It's fully customisable for each game, and after 20 mins of personalising when I first got it, I've never had to do again.

A key benefit is that you can look at your in-ship menus, and select options in seconds via your joystick... so easy and quick. Again, very intuitive.

Go on, you won't regret it!

I already have bud, as I've said in my original post, I don't even think I need to tweak it, although I might do & your right, I don't regret it one bit. ;)
