Legal and illegal salvage

Why is salvage picked up among floating debris in space considered illegal but salvage picked up from planetary surfaces considered completely fine? Aren't they the same thing?

Especially occupied escape pods floating in space. Can't we bring them in as rescues? Maybe not for money but for a rep boost from the controlling faction. I mean, you'd be saving the lives of people who are obviously having a lousy day.

This has always confused me too. There are some items on moons and planets that are also classed as illegal :/

I had to smuggle nerve gas into a fed station that I found on the surface. Can't see what the big deal is with unscrupulously selling nerve gas. Now occupied escape pods.... See Aliens 3. And 4 kinda now that I think of it.

Also why should a Bounty only carry a WANTED for it's own System whilst Stolen Cargo is Universal? I know it was marked as Stolen because upon destruction of their Ship they signed it before blowing up just to make it awkward for any grabbers but why would another System even care where we got it from?
.
Say even if you find that Commodity you'd been searching all over for to MOD with (should not be so rare) and you really don't care about completeing the Mission and so take it to not bother gaining REP (who cares - they are in a huge minority anyway). Taking it out of that System should NOT mark it as Illicit Cargo IMO.

I agree.

salvage law has been enshrined in maritime law for hundreds of years. As long as it isn't marked or the owner cannot be traced, it's finders keepers.

I think slavage law states you need to let the authorities know you have taken stuff in for 'Safe keeping' after a set period if the owner does not make themselves known you are allowed to keep it. I think a similar mechanic would be a good idea in game. Turn in salvage to authorities then get a notification / reward at a later stage.

Life Pod recovery should just get a bonus full stop - Your saving a life and this should be encouraged.

IMO ALL salvage should be legal, except for those commodities that are illegal, in a given system, to begin with.

Hear hear I say, totes agree peeps.

It would be nice if someone from FDev would chime in on why this all is. Or, take your suggestions into consideration. I agree with all of you guys, space salvage should be legally salvageable.

Isn't that the whole point of the system we have though, when it's illegal it's cause it's security tagged as belonging to someone.

When you jettison your own cargo you have the option of abandoning it, which removes your ownership tag and makes it legal salvage for anyone else. If you don't abandon, it's illegal salvage for anyone else to nab it.

So I guess the real question here is, who's leaving unowned cargo littered over planets & why?

Sure but when the cargo is among ship wreckage, then chances are the owners are dead so it no longer belongs to anyone. Or, the owners are also floating with the wreckage in escape pods. So, yes, they belong to themselves but I think they would want to be saved instead of stuck floating in space.
