First, I would like to apologize for the now deleted post, I was tired and not thinking properly and made a criticism of someone's viewpoint without offering a constructive reasoning as to why I disagreed. Now that I've had some sleep and coffee I would like to address the problem commanders are foreseeing with having the ability to change their names.
As a few pointed out, keeping the cash price at a reasonably high margin would keep it from being "abused" ( I was thinking somewhere between $15-$25 USD, with a 3 month cool down before having the ability to do so again.)
As was also pointed out, changing a name will still keep those people on your friend/blocked list allowing you to notice the change. (if someone is griefing or harrassing you I would hope you would think to add them to the blocked list.)
When a name is changed it will be in the game's log and should be a fairly simple copy/paste to either a galnet feed or forum thread (updated weekly or monthly).
And lastly, while I do agree with the concerns of certain infamous commanders changing names to avoid immediate rebuttal by their peers, people do change and we should not take away that chance from them. (ex. The infamous DreadPirateRoberts one day decides to give up his life of crime and wants to instead help his fellow commanders, due to his infamy no one will go near him or even acknowledge him on comms, this would allow him to rebuild his image and name without having to restart from scratch.)
And yes I do know people can and will abuse it (as any and everything can be), but I feel this would be in the vast minority, and not the majority of players who would like to update their ign due to rp, or as also suggested, couldn't find a name they liked and went with the first one they could get to be accepted and now wish to change having now thought of one that suites them.
