Legal Salvage

Lately I've been taking some legal salvage missions at stations and have been enjoying them quite a bit. I think it would be an improvement to ED if some of the cargo found adrift out there in the void was legal as well. The possibility of stumbling across valuable cargo, more so since it would be legal, would encourage stopping at salvageable wrecks and weak signal sources, even when not on a mission. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall this was so in previous incarnations of Elite.

True, it makes no sense that i.e. an Occupied Escape Pod or Black Box 400LY from the bubble should be illegal.

Instead, it should be a highly recognized civic duty to return those to civilization safely - and cause possible follow-up Missions or simply a thankful surprise gift by the rescued person(s) or Investigative Missions issued by Authorities sometime later.

Same IMHO for any Slaves/Imperial Slaves you find dying in floating Cargo Canisters after some Pirate NPC vanished.
Pick them up to save their lifes and become a Slaver/Smuggler - leave them be and witness their certain death.

Lots of room for improvement and another ignored Opportunity for surprising Missions and Branches/Adventure.

Just dreaming, if I had full control over Mission and event design :

Occupied Escape Pod in Salvage Wreckage Signal Source

- gets picked up by Player

Options :
1) deliver to nearest Outpost/Station, hand over to legal Authorities [a]
2) deliver to nearest Outpost/Station, sell into Black Market as Slave

[a] Option doesn't pay Credits but increases local Rep. Has chance of spawning follow-up Missions immediately or sometime later (if later and not within System, it will contact you via longrange Comms)
2a) Authority offers to investigage, take a small fleet of Ships into specified location to search for additional clues or Salvage
2b) Authoriity has woken up the Rescued person and tasks you to shadow, hunt and take down the Criminals on your own
2c) Authoriity has woken up the Rescued person and tasks you to shadow a large Criminal Wing on your own, but strike will occur after Rendevouz with Authority fleet for a larger battle

3) Occupant wakes up in your Cargo Bay and establishes Communcation

3a) asks you to return him to a specific location (might be trouble inbetween from criminals attempting to finish him off)
3b) asks you to return him to his PowerPlay Control System (depending on his Rank 1-5 for various reward - opposing Powers will try to intercept)
3c) asks you to bring him at least xx% closer to civilization where you will rendevouz with his Allies for transfer of his Pad and a reduced Reward
3d) asks you for to avange him right away for a very high reward and hunt down the criminals before returning him home safely
3e) asks you to retrieve additional important lost Cargo within the System of demise of his Wingman before returning, with small change of resucing his Wingman as well
3f) turns out he's a VIP with a Government and begs you to rendevouz inside an RV System. Expect heavy resistance, reinforcements and Pickup will arrive after 5-10 Minutes (stay alive Mission branch)
3g) he got stripped from a Convoy before losing his Ship. Asks for RV with Convoy and Escort for that Convoy for xx Systems. Escort & Convoy Combat Mission branch.

All that would be Mission requests. On Option 3, the Occupant would offer at least 2 other choices before giving up to your personal decision if you find yourself unable/unwilling to comply.

...that's just what I could come up with ad-hoc, solely based on a single Occupied Escape Pod :D

I think picking up unauthorised salvage should spawn at least a couple of missions offering the moral and immoral options of dealing with these goods or people.
Edit - ninja'd by FalconFly. ^^ What he said.

I believe your mission suggestions are wonderful ideas. I also wish they would add more depth to missions. I ususlly just ignore the whole process and either farm compromised NAV beacons or go mining. When mining, I always check to see if there are any lucrative opportunities. You also need to farm missions if you are trying to gain rank. It would be wonderful to rescue a exceptionally rare escape pod and it turn out to be a very high ranking official that instantly grants a significant rank or reputation increase. Han Solo went from being a smuggler to hero of the Alliance after rescuing a princess. Why can't we have a similar (exceptionally rare) mission. Rare missions with a significant reward that are accessible to everyone are a common part of most online games.
