Lenovo Explorer installation fails... any help is appreciated!

Hi all, first off, I've posted this to the WMR subreddit, but wanted to post here as well to see if anyone else is running into this specific issue.

I got my Lenovo Explorer yesterday and was excited to get it installed and working so I can finally play Elite Dangerous in VR.

Well, like many others, I ran into issues during the download portion of the setup. The first run, it would fail and state that it couldn't download the software. Subsequent runs, when clicking "try again" would just hang at approximately 29%.

After some searching, it was apparent that it's likely tied to a pending windows update. However, when I go look, there is no update to download.

So I ran the windows update troubleshooter. In there, it detects a corrupted database, as well as some pending updates. The troubleshooter "fixes" both, however if I run the troubleshooter again, it discovers both issues again, and "fixes" them. I've tried restarting after I run the troubleshooter, but again, it still persists.

It seems like this is where my hangup is, and I'm starting to wonder if it's tied to the October 2018 update.

FWIW, I've also gone thru Method 1 & 2 per this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_update-insiderplat_pc/windows-update-database-corruption/7d4a68e8-cad3-422b-a54b-d5c17e397319

The first run of of the System File Checker did catch something and repair it, but it had no impact on the failed WMR installation.

I attempted method 3, but even after stopping all services, and running as administrator, I'm told "access denied" when trying to rename the folders.

Also to cover the basics, yes I've got the headset plugged into the proper ports, my PC is compatible (Ryzen 2700x, gtx1080, etc).

If anyone has suggestions, I'd be more than happy to hear! I'm going to try method 3 (from the link above) when I boot into safe mode to see if that will allow me to rename the files. If that doesn't work, then I'll see if I can get the Insider update for the Oct 18 update.
If none of that works, I'm only left with a reinstall of windows, which on my lovely 3mbps connection should take some time...

Update.

I was able to get the headset working. Long story short, it was indeed an issue with windows update. Uninstalling the last generic security update, restarting, and reinstalling the updates cleared the issue and the headset fired right up.

Thanks, my takeaway from all the digging I did and other fixes is this:

If your WMR headset isn't working right away, just uninstall the last update (doesn't matter, just first one on the list), then run the WMR portal application, it should give you a message saying there's a windows update waiting. Go to the windows update interface, install it, and it should ideally set you straight.

I tried just about every other fix out there because many of them talking about uninstalling updates speak specifically to the large April 2018 windows update, but mentioned that things were fixed in subsequent updates. So, I was left with the impression it was something else.

Now, whether my issue was related to the cluster that the October 2018 update/recall was, I'm not sure, but what I do know is that whatever update "issue" that the Mixed Reality Portal was stalling on got sorted out after uninstalling/reinstalling the last security update.

Hopefully this helps people in the future if they're having similar issues!
