Lens mod for Vive

I don't own a Vive (oculus Rift here) but a video just popped up in my YT feed....

Supposed to markedly improve the image in the Vive HMD

Don't know the efficacy of this mod but it looks good

I have successfully done this mod a coupe of weeks ago mainly for ED.. and all I can say is WOW its so nice to play with nearly ZERO god rays/concentric rings, text is pin sharp over 85% of the screen now and elite looks so crisp its amazing tbh its feels a lot like my DK2 did back in the day, but with better res and FOV,yes the distortion is a factor, but once you get it settled on your face right with the fix its near enough gone any vive users I strongly suggest having a look at the video (at your own risk ofc).
this is the distortion fix that worked best for me and i think has the best 3d Depth https://pastebin.com/sNXT6FyW

and my post with tips I left on SweVivers excellent Guide

"I've done this mod myself and overall I'm very happy my vive feels like a higher res DK2 now, btw on the dust issue I got zero dust in the HMD by filling my bathroom with steam for 15 mins by running your shower/bath, then let the steam clear and do the lens transfer in the bathroom (I used a metal spudger and a suction cup and they popped right out) now you will have maybe a 5 min window when there's virtually no dust in the air oh and print the adaptors with ABS not PLA as PLA flakes. I see the same FOV with a 6mm pad and by going -2mm on your IPD removes any eye strain"

How many hours in a row have you spent with the lens mod? Now when I got the pro a spare vive to do experiments on..

I did the mod a few days ago on standard Vive and I have to say, it's a significant improvement.

Since playing Elite on the Vive, i've been unable to play on a 2d monitor. However in the Vive, although the experience is great, i've found it uncomfortable in having to move my head around to look at nav and function panels. Just too much neck movement. So thanks to Vive, i've actually reduced my Elite sessions considerably.

After this mod, there is no need to twist my neck anymore. Just a slight head movement to activate the panel then moving eyes to read. It's clear. It's actually so clear, i can see the pixels at any corner of the screen (though your brain adjusts to that and it's not a problem).

I even asked the wife to take a look. She's no interest in VR related things, but once she sat in the cockpit, she was gob-smacked by what she was seeing. Couldn't get her off it for a good 30 mins. Last time I do that again!

So if you are prepared to do this mod, I'd certainly recommend it. It makes a great incremental upgrade whilst waiting for better quality/cost headsets to arrive.

Just finished the mod myself including the distortion correction. My Vive is out of warranty anyway but I have to say I would have taken the leap also within the warranty period.
Ultimately for me it was worth it. The images feels much more clear and no god-rays/lensflares in Elite anymore.
I have to say even though it was discussed in the video I had a slight fear for the FOV but I can't see a difference - all good and since the GearVR lenses are sharper in the corners it is a clear benefit.

I wonder why HTC is sticking with the fresnel lenses? Yes they are flatter but having a clear view is the major selling point for me.
Bottom line so far it was really worth it to do this mod for a total of rougly 30 € (would have been a bit cheaper but I selected a higher print resolution for the lens adapters)

See you out in the black
Cheers

So who wants to be the first to void the warranty on a Vive Pro? I'm thinking the lens mod on that would give the best IQ of any HMD on the market.

I love this mod its doing fantastic job in Elite Dangerous, all blur is gone, colors are even more vivid, picture is ultra sharp. There is still a tiny barell distortion, but is not noticable during flight and activity.

Yup it stunning isn't it, tbh i get more pupil swim in my rift..(my IPD 71.4) also once you get the distortion file right there's no going back everything in VR has been great, and is it me or has it fixed the scale issue too? :D

Any cons?

Also, how about other games, how have they been affected?

hmm interesting My IPD is high at 71.4 I dialed it down after the mod to 69.4 and have zero eyestrain (had mild eye strain at 71.4) and as an added bonus the scale looks better now too a win/win apart from the very minor distortion with this fix https://pastebin.com/sNXT6FyW .

PS. I also read the mod is not recommended/suitable for people with IPD's under 62mm as it can cause eye strain.

no not really it does take some work trying distortion fixes to get it right, but the results are worth it IMO, also some clever guys/girls on the Vive Reddit are working on a live adjustable distortion fixing program which allows you to mod your OWN original file which will give even better results.

I see no downside so far, having played other titles also such as Dead Effect, Talos Principle or Doom VFR
Besides the slight distortions mentioned already that you can mitigate with the edited distortion file.
Depending on how much time you spend you might still see a slight distortion when moving your head and looking along flat surfaces
However I barely notice.

So overall the mod is great much more clarity and not flare effects anymore

Just 3D printed the adapters today and got a Gear VR for £10 :D
The difference is huge, very very clear and much better sweet spot, very happy !
