I think the trading system is working and functional at the moment, but lacks any depth or complexity. It mostly comes down to: buy Tech, sell to Refinement, buy Gold/Palladium, sell to High-Tech. This is a sad thing, since there are so many possibilities to expand on the current system.
There are several things that could be done, like make the profit difference much bigger for cheaper, atm unused commodities, like fuel or food, or reduce size of those commodities so we can carry more and generate more profits.
But what I think would be a big thing is the possibility to buy and sell things from the Outfitting screen to and from other CMDRs. There's no reason in my mind why we shouldn't store weapons or internal compartments in our cargo racks and fly them to systems that need those. I mean, there's a certain discrepancy between the game and the lore or the world. We buy things noone needs or uses, we sell those things to stations that "need" those things, but don't use them really. Commodities are mostly one and the same thing, with different prices and demands attached.
Imagine carrying Pulse Lasers, Chaff or even ships to Lugh to support other players that don't have the time or capacity to visit nearby High-Tech systems. Or imagine hauling different kinds of ammunition (Point defence, Shield cell, Heat sink, etc.) to Lugh, because why should a station never run out of ammunition? This would create so much meta game it's mind-boggling why this isn't implemented. We could ask a trader in a station to get us stuff, because we need it. The forums would be full of posts like: "there's a conflict, but no supply of weapons or ammunition. Traders we need your support" etc.
In praxis this would work like an auction house: you could hand your stuff over to a station and place an market place offer, other players see that offer in the Commodities market and can buy it. You could still use the Outfitting screen, where you then could use weapons and internal parts from your ship storage or station storage (maybe have a fee for storing stuff). You could fly around with different weapon and ship configurations, which you can change at a station.
I love this game and its future makes me so happy and excited.
