Let us mine surface ores with a hand tool and pick them up into our backpacks.

Our ships can have mining beams and collect ores in space. our SRVs can mine surface deposits and gather the ores, but its not allowed to shoot a rock by hands and gather the materials that fall off? I recently was on a mission and while walking over to it saw a rock with a crystal on it. I shot it and the crystal fell off, but I wasn't allowed to pick it up. I am hurting badly for money now so that would have helped, and as a player of survival games mining surface rocks is part of the game. Here...not so much. lets make it work here too. I enjoy walking along exploring on foot...even more if I could make a few dollars from it.

To be honest all mining gameplay, including core mining, could be transposed to on foot gameplay. Imagine cracking open a rock with a fossil that you can scan or a sub surface probe that you shoot into fissures of the ground to scan the planet core to get additional exploration data.
Of course the same could be used to obtain precious gems too.
