Let's call it ship rental instead of ship transfer?

Just curious, couldn't we just call it "ship rental" (you would rent a ship similar to the the one you have in a far away station), instead of calling it a ship transfer?
You pay per hour of use (for example)
You return it when you are done
If you lose the rental ship, you lose your real ship (i.e. you can re-buy the destroyed ship at the insurance screen, then return it to the rental station, which means you lose your ship)

* Instant transfer is likely to have a less plausible/desirable explanation for how the feature works in game lore.
- Rental should take care of this?

* Instant transfer will lessen the need to have decent frame shift drives in ships other than one, “main” explorer type vessel.
- Make it so that jumping in a rental ship will be very expensive and/or limit the number of jumps a rental ship can perform and/or max distance from rental station ?

* Instant ship transfer will remove any potential game play from deciding when/if transfer should be initiated
* Instant ship transfer undermines the scale of the galaxy.
- Could renting instead of ship transfer take care of those 2 points above by perhaps somehow introducing additional mechanics that would only make sense when renting a ship?

Just a thought...
 
I would assume when you get a rental ship it comes without your personal customisations, such as engineered mods?
 
This sounds like a worse idea than ship transfer.

You want an explanation for instant ship transfer? Fine. Lots of things that take time in real life are done instantly in Elite to make the game enjoyable. So maybe quit your whining and moaning and wait to see how it is in the beta.
 
DragoonKnight, i actually don't mind ship transfer. Was just trying to come up with ilternative ideas for people who do.
Essentially it would be the same as ship transfer but by calling it ship rental fdevs would be able to introduce additional limitations that they could put into place to take care of the different objections people have against ship transfer. And such limitations would only make sense if you rented a ship vs transfer a ship.
So for example,evoelise, personal customizations from engineers could or could not be included depending on other factors (ie, it will cost more, or it can only be rented after jumping to a nearby station which has the hardware, etc). Or they could just be included if that is what makes sense.

How does this work for

- Engineered (unique) modules
- Stations that don't sell specific ships / modules
- Stations that don't sell ships at all

?
 
The point that i am trying to make is that it would be coded almost the same way as ship transfer but by calling it "ship rental" they would be able to introduce variables that would not make sense if they called it ship transfer. These variables would be used to code limitations/features meant to take care of the objections people have against instant ship transfer.
