They would be made by mega-corporations out of the cheapest ingredients available and the design brief would have been "Make it cheap to make, and don't poison anyone... but cheap first and foremost"

As far as I understood it us pilots tend to use those as well as they are easily stored, don't take up a lot of space and last forever, which is especially useful for those of us going on an extended exploration trip.

Deep space explorers, and space travellers in general, must get used to the concept of recycling all food matter. The autochef printers on spaceships are attached to a Tiolce Waste2Paste unit, rather than the standard chef which uses an array of food cartridges as thier raw ingredient supply. To quote from the in-game description of the Tiolce Waste2Paste unit (a Rare Good which can be found in Tiolce, and which game lore says are installed on every spaceship):

The original and best, turning all your waste into a nutritious and wholesome paste.

Flavours and additives added to the paste before consumption may be restricted to compounds that do not compromise the functionality of the Waste2Paste unit. Curries, chilli peppers and other spicy foods containing capsaicin and related compounds might be forbidden, for example. I suspect the resultant menu options might be varied, but rather bland overall.

Even for ships that normally don't actually spend very much time in space, like a short-hop passenger taxi or combat ship, a Tiolce Waste2Paste unit is installed, just in case of emergency.

I am now super hungry............... :p

I hope this discussion about waste recycling has fixed your problem for you, now.😅
