Let's have some FUN with SRVs!

This should be an easy one: Make the SRV's hull a little sturdier when it comes to the environment. Those little racers could be real fun to drive fast on some lonely planet's surface (especially given how far apart the shootable rocks usually are). It's also quite recreational when you get out of the cockpit for a bit.

But of course basically every little bump costs at least 1 percent. That can't be explained even by realism - driving a scrappy beach buggy over flat terrain doesn't destroy it. So space buggies shouldn't hurt that much when you drive them a little recklessly.

I think the sturdiness vs. weapons fire is spot on. It's just that the slightest bump into a rock or landing after a jump costs some hull points.

I'm not sure there is an issue with the sturdyness. Low grav planets barely scrape your SRV while hi gravs do. Which seems ok to me. Plus, you're smashing a little rover across rough terrain at ridiculous speeds... in space..

If I hit a boulder the size of my wheel in my car, I'm pretty sure it'd do more than 1% damage. :D

That said, I'd love a faster, much faster, (like 50-60m/s, or 111-134mph!) 4 wheel, but rear wheel drive SRV dune buggy type thing. Which is obviously much weaker, with weaker thrusters, so you can really belt along those brilliant, but rare perfectly flat plateaus.
And, of course, fly off the edge, dukes of hazard style!

But getting into fights or crashing isn't going to end well.

Have you seen these "small" rocks? I am surprised how little damage your not-so-small buggy takes from collisions as well. I think you can drive slightly faster on the roads/tracks at surface stations.

I get the wish for higher possible speeds, but it would be silly in my opinion if the SRV could approach speeds of the slower spaceships.
An alternative could be something similar to Skimmers, hovering above the terrain, or with legs, being able to climb the steep canyons like Spiderman ;).
Aimless driving is a bit discouraged by the reveal of geological/biological surface locations anyway

Could be? They are!

Or maybe try a spot of base jumping at one of the sites listed here.

What irks me about SRV bumps is that they have shields, yet those shields do nothing against the environment.

Take your ship, however, and ram something with shields. You're immortal as long as the shields hold.

So which is it? Do shields make you invincible while they're up? Or don't they? We're not talking about "reverb cascade" moon rocks here. Internal consistency is why SRV's bug me. You can't even claim something asinine like "the shields don't extend under the wheels" because rolling over on your hood most certainly causes the same kind of damage. It's one of those things where Fdev just needs to make up their minds on how things work and live with the consequences. Shields should either ALWAYS protect you from impact or NEVER. None of this nonsense.
