Proposal Discussion Let's talk avatars

Also, they can't just change the lore depending what game mode you are playing.... and if they had cloning in ironman, it might as well not be ironman.

The lore evolves as events happen. Iron Man could mean don't use any clones, dead is dead.

Someone said you continue playing without the Iron Man status. That is not a real hardcore mode.
Hardcore is when you die, your character is terminated permanently and you must start a new character.

Well, the sense behind ironman was always kinda shaky for me anyhow, since:

"Permanently killed commanders can be resurrected as a normal commander (no ironman flag), continuing from when they died"

...but, yea, there is no cloning, it's all handled via escape pods.

Has there been any indication from FD if we'll see static avatars, looking in from the outside, in our ships prior to game release?

Or will the chair appear empty until we are able to walk around ships and stations?

As someone said, in ironman "dead is dead".

From the Wikipedia about the book:
In the novel's somewhat dystopian world, human personalities can be stored digitally and downloaded into new bodies, called sleeves. Most people have cortical stacks in their spinal columns that store their memories. If their body dies, their stack can be stored indefinitely. Catholics have arranged that they will not be resleeved as they believe that the soul goes to Heaven when they die, and so would not pass on to the new sleeve. This makes Catholics targets for murder, since killers know their victim will not be resleeved to testify.

Seems that ironman-mode is the catholic way to play ED. :D

They haven't said anything.

My guess is that if they have time to make some people that walk around inside the stations as a graphical backdrop for the first release they could just stick one of those into the ship. The same models could also serve as placeholders for the NPC crew inside the ships for the time being.

EDIT: I'm not bashing on ED here, I just think EVE and SC (apparently) have very nice character avatars...

My wish, which I posted back in Dec 2013 during the KS campaign, was for an advanced, modern avatar system that would allow a player to customise their appearance to the Nth degree. As the pilot is a representation of you "in game" how you look is as important to me as how you pilot the ship - more so when the add on to walk about is released. Sadly I suspect that's when it will be developed and not for initial release.

Thanks for the links btw - the EVE one I had seen and had a lot of fun playing with the demo myself to create a "just right" avatar. The SC one was new and wow - very impressive modern graphics.

One can live in hope.

I watched vid of a bit of tech from intel a few months back (can't find it now) but you could upload your own face and it mapped it on a virtual character. I would have thought something like that might be worth considering.

Whilst I understand why its not present in ED atm due to resources I do think avatars for NPCs and others is quite important in giving meaning to our encounters. As it stands, its just a ship and a name and so we are missing the attachment we would otherwise have.

Quite true - the devs constantly spoke of wanting you to feel attached to your ship, to give the death of one meaning, etc ... well that's not going to happen as it's an inanimate object and easily replaceable. Make me feel attached to my commander as that's me! Give me a face and let's party! :)

Personally, I don't like the idea of walking around in ED. ED is based on a game/sim from 1984, remade in it's image with modern technology and programming methods. That's all DB and FDEV have ever said it was supposed to be, and to change it into something it's not, is a bad idea, it just makes ED into a clone of all the other games out there. If ED is to succeed, it needs to be able to stand on it's own merits, based on it's designer's ideas and ideals.

David has explicitly stated that he wants to be able to walk around in starports and steal other peoples ships.

I can't remember the exact quote but he said he like the idea because Elite would them become a universe that you experience rather than a game you play.

These features were mentioned even in the original Kickstarter if I remember correctly.

That's just it though, it's getting into the realms of fantasy space magic, which I though elite was avoiding by and large (with the exception of hyperspace)

It also makes death a bit meaningless in the context of the fiction.... There is no reason for characters to feel fear...

I like the idea that there would be some mechanism that generates changes for you character after you die in game. So you respawn as someone who looks close enough to you original design as makes no difference to you but they are different enough that they look like a different person.

Obviously this wouldn't make sense for things like faction standing or bank balance as you are now playing as somebody different but hey ho...

I agree with you on the clone thing. The idea in the game at the moment is that an escape pod takes you to the last starport you docked at (should be the nearest IMO) and then you can buy your old loadout or get the Sidewinder from Azeban Orbital.

This all changes when you can be killed as a person but I'm with you on the clones thing. It really doesn't fit the lore of the game at all. Why use progeniter cells (I think I've spelled that wrong) to stay healthy and fight of age when you could just have a clone to move into when you feel like it?

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
If done well, I think the 'walking around outside of your ship' part of Elite could be a phenomenal experience, at least for myself. I really enjoy avatar creation/customization. There's a lot of opportunity to create very immersive experiences in the first person.

Really, I don't think Elite Dangerous will be 'complete' for me until both the avatar and planetary landing modules are rolled into the game.

Yep, it will get a bit annoying if David keeps stealing our ships....

I think the idea is to make stealing a players ship from the dock incredibly difficult to survive.

Obviously none of that applies to David so keep and eye out if you meet him in game! :D

I honestly don't care about the walking around stuff, but being able to design your own avatar definitely appeals to me. I'm really not sure why that is, but it was one aspect of EVE that I took to.

It's not a big issue for me, but I'd be happy to see it.
