Letters of Marque

With the new Powerplay update rapidly approaching, it got me thinking. In the olden days, piracy was sometimes sanctioned via letters of marque. I think there should be a way for the less scrupulous of us to gain ranks without changing playstyle. It'd be a bit like the kill however many traders contracts but with more reason and sense behind it.

Furthermore, if you go back to the territory where you were issued the letters, any cargo that you gained from your bit of state sponsored piracy can be sold like normal cargo rather than at a black market.

I believe Letters of Marque were among the DDF proposals - as were many things.

+1 Rep. I would love to see this happen.

I would love to see faction sanctioned piracy! Seeing as I've made it my personal mission to give the Federation as much of a headache as I can, I'm sure my glorious Emperor would be grateful towards loyal go-getters like myself. I'm sure handing stolen federation goods over to imperial control would be well rewarded as well, since gratitude doesn't exactly pay the bills.

Am I right in thinking you wouldn't really be a pirate then, but a privateer? You wouldn't be able to attack anyone, just random traders / miners etc. from "the other side".

I reckon that could be a grey area - letters of marque were often abused.

True, but that is why Pirates got to have their fun in the systems they were issued. The thing with the letters though, FD would need to create a system to allow Letter holders free passage even with bounties against them. As long as the bounty wasn't against the issuers faction, they "should" not be fired upon.

Completely agree. Letters of Marque would add great depth to piracy.
First a wannabee pirate would have to earn a reputation in a certain area to get such a letter.
And when he got it he would have to take care to leave certain targets alone, because otherwise he would lose the privilege and become a target himself.
