Newcomer / Intro Level 3 detailed scan?

I've fitted detailed- and advanced discovery scanners to my Viper and are exploring outer space. When looking at my statistics I've done close to 500 level 2 detailed scans, but I also see a option for level 3 detailed scans (in my case=0).
So I wonder, what is this level 3 detailed scan? What sort of equipment is needed for this type of scan?

Another thread I've read somewhere suspected that it's the a record of the detailed scans up to a certain stage pre-release (beta/gamma/.... whatever).

There's a thread in the bug report section of the site, suggesting it's just not working. There is something called a "Penetrative Scan", distinct from a Detailed Scan, which gives you a Level 3. But it doesn't seem to be working correctly any more. Frontier are aware of it, and investigating.

The level 3 scans is there as a placeholder. Not currently in used but there will be plans for it

Rumours is that is there for planetary landing type of scans.

More likely rumours out there is that it is bugged.

I've been exploring a lot, it's my main profession. I have all the expensive gear and zero level 3 scans registered. I think it's a bug.

Been curious about this lvl 3 scan as well, but filed it off under "Stuff that don't matter yet".

Maybe they counted it differently before.
For example perhaps just finding the rock with the disco scanner where lvl 1.
Detail scanning without surface scanner a lvl 2 and with surface scanner as the elusive lvl 3 ?

Yes, I show 619 level 3 detail scans in my stats as well. It's a mystery how or when it is happening, but occasionally a level 3 scan does register. I fly an Asp Explorer with an advanced discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner. My explorer rank is presently at "Pathfinder" level.

but the HUD display of the stats is broken (confirmed by the devs and under investigation), and possibly the data sales are not registering correctly (this has not been officially confirmed).

It's a bit of a mess, but even if transactions have not gone through correctly FD wil have a record of this and should be able to retrospectively adjust them.

That would be nice. I had assumed that it was ping=1, standard scan=2, DSS=3 but know that my display was giving me L2 scans only despite not having started exploring until I got both ADS and DSS. So I now may be getting a boost to my balance and trading rank if the rewards have been just for L2 scans when I have been doing L3 on the 1K odd scans I have done so far.
