Life as we know it with ED...

Greetings,

If your life is all about playing Elite Dangerous and nothing else matters than good for you! Maybe you have figured out the karma in your life which works. For me I love the game but play it WAY too much! Living in Indiana USA I need to go to Florida now and then to meet up with close personal friends, have my dogs play in the sunshine and surf in the Atlantic Ocean, play a jazz keyboard with the pros and remember that life is a lot more than a game on a computer. Nor do I promote ED with those I love in Florida as it in the worse case can be a drug we need to get our fix. So I recommend having fun with the game but never get too serious about it. Too much of anything never works out very well. This from a guy who has been in love with the game with a website devoted to it for 20 plus years. Nor do I care if you visit it. I'm not the only one who loves the game with many more websites long before ED went Alpha to get the ball rolling. Go figure.

Regards

I'm a network Administrator by day, an ordained minister, an avid shooter and hunter. I pilot a very nice ship for private charters, am considering pursuing a private pilot's license, and have a family.

Elite is what I do instead of things like Watching TV, going to bars, or when the weather sucks and there's nothing else to do.

I think there are a fair few ED players that just can't power up the PC as soon as they get home from work and play till it's sunrise.

Wife/husband/significant other as well as children and friends all conspire to get in the way of worshipping at the altar that is Elite Dangerous.

I don't play this game half as much as I want to, and my wife thinks I play it twice too much and too often!

As for in game compassion, you lose all that as soon as you gain a bounty, every CMDR knows that!

I'm into Brownings with hunting and competitive skeet shooting. Pretty good at it. Started with my grandfather with a SA-22 at age 10. I miss those days and my grandfather even more.

You are married and playing the game is working out so far. You will need to invest in expensive diamonds to keep that better half appreciating and understanding your need to play ED!

I came across that website a while ago when I was looking for some information on the older Elite games. Didn't realise it was yours.

Great site, and thanks for the info :)

After seeing the title of this thread, I feel compelled to pop my head in and share something.

Sometimes I read through the forums and pretend that everyone is discussing the other "ED."

Have fun!

I keep it online at a considerable cost for people like you who appreciate it. Makes my day now and then.

I'm not obsessed with ED, but I am certainly VERY passionate about it. It's a hobby and passion, but - like with all hobbies - it can take over your life if you let it to. It did happen to me last year, where I dedicated WAY too much time to administer and organise my player faction. It was great time for me in ED, we now have most systems (I believe) of all the player factions, we're in the official ED lore and Drew's new book and our small community of (depending on people coming and going) 200-300 players is very active and many of us became close friends, playing other games, meeting IRL etc.

This took a toll on my personal life, as I have neglected some of my friends, but I realised that in time and cut down on the amount of time I commit to my group. This year is certainly going to be different. I still have the passion, but I won't let it take over this time :)

You are not alone in the other discussions having little to do with ED.

Excellent and good for you moving on with the game versus real life. We can be so passionate especially in the USA when it comes to NFL Football going nuts over it. What really counts in the end is making a positive difference in the people you meet along the way in life. No game can even come close to that.

It's been weird for me :)
I do spend quite a few hours in game, but recently it's been the trigger for loads of cool things.
I started streaming elite on twitch.
I had to learn obs and the twitch setup.
I had to figure out how to do all the alerts, overlays and graphics.
From there I needed to get decent mic settings so I relearned Adobe audition.
To build a nice intro screen I delved into premier pro and after effects.
In between streaming elite I started doing Photoshop tutorials.

All this stuff I've learned is due to me playing Elite :) my brain has never worked so hard lol. On top of that I've got a full time job, family and a rabbit to take care of.

I am pretty obsessive when I get into something, but it's all useful stuff I'm learning, I've even had to become more chatty and sociable for the streaming thing.

So... Playing this game has been positive :)

Thanks, but I'll field this one myself.

As an ordained minister, please don't hunt. Show some compassion.

Let me clear up some very common misconceptions, especially those held by folks who refuse to eat anything but grass that has died of natural causes.

1. There are two main kinds of hunters - those who respect nature, and respect the animals they hunt, who eat what they hunt, and leave very little to actually go to waste. Then there are those who simply shoot and kill things they have no intention of eating, simply because they can.

I happen to fall into the first category. I hunt deer, elk, bison and wild boars. I eat deer, elk, bison and wild boars. A deer or two taken provides enough high-quality, lean, healthy meat for me and my family for several months. An elk will last us half a year. A bison will feed us for a year at least. Wild boars will last a couple days, unless I happen to throw one of my somewhat famous wild hog roasts, in which case a wild boar will feed around 20 people an outstanding meal and is one heck of a great party too.

I do not condone so-called "sport" hunting. I consider it wasteful and disrespectful.

2. Animals like Deer are not particularly smart animals. They will over-graze an area, eating everything edible until the herd begins to perish from starvation, leaving sickly and dying deer to be hit by cars, or simply to perish of starvation. Hunting them helps control their population, ensuring a strong and healthy herd, and an abundance of food for the herds.

3. Wild Hogs are incredibly destructive, and not a native species to this part of the world. They reproduce at incredible rates and are absolutely devastating on the ecosystem. They destroy farmland, create hazards, often dig up buried power lines, gas lines, water lines, and wreck untold damage annually, which is why most states in the US impose nearly no restrictions or limitations on the hunting of wild boars.

4. Hunters do not want their quarry to suffer. A quick, clean kill is always preferred. This is far more compassionate than a deer that has its back legs crushed by an automobile and is simple avoided as a hazard by other drivers as the creature struggles to find a place to crawl off to and die a very miserable death.

5. Hunting is one of the most ancient and revered human traditions. It has sustained and united people for millions of years.

6. The overwhelming majority of hunters contribute more to the maintenance and upkeep of public lands annually then all the tree-huggers and grass-eaters combined. Speaking for myself, I cannot abide seeing litter, trash or waste on public lands, and remove an average of 200 gallons of garbage, litter and waste annually from the areas I hunt. This benefits not only the animals, but also every single person who visits these locations.

7. Organizations such as PETA are among some of the most inhumane in the world. "In all, PETA killed 1,456 cats and dogs in 2015, bringing the total PETA has reported killing to 34,970 since records began in the second half of 1998. Those unfortunate victims amounted to 73.76% of the total dogs and cats that entered PETA’s shelter. It’s a very high kill rate by normal measures, but given PETA has killed upwards of 97% of its charges in some years, the toll is low for the animal liberation group." - Source: https://www.consumerfreedom.com/2016/03/petas-pet-killing-claimed-1456-victims-in-2015/
While on the surface, organizations like this may present a compassionate public face, it is only a mask for the ugly truth that lies just beneath the surface.

While I do not disrespect your opinion, I do hope you take away from this at least some respect for my position as well.

No. As a person with free will, I decide when its time to comment, and when I saw ordained minister and hunter in the same sentence something felt very wrong.

reasons...

I have no idea why you would think bringing PETA into the discussion, its not relevant in any way. Its just an organization with its own methods and goals, sometimes controversial, sometimes not.

I know its a losing battle trying to argue with you, but what I hoped is that since you believe in a higher power, and the suffering of others is important to this religion, you would avoid causing harm and suffering to other beings as well. Arguing that the deer aren't smart makes no difference, its their life in their own animal universe, its not our business to judge them. We are simply another species. And don't think that you are doing nature a favor by killing boars, nature has its own ways of keeping balance, but again humans, by hunting the predators, like wolves, hurt the balance. And even though hunting is part of human history, today we truly have a choice to change our habits. Hunting has become a choice, and you truly can choose to let these animals live their lives how they see fit. They are put in a very bad position, with no real defenses again human technology, and compassion is the only hope for them. Human intelligence and resourcefulness is a curse for most beings in this world, but I naively still think there is hope if only people would understand the really tough position we put animals in. So many animals are driven to extinction by human interference, and all could be avoided with compassion. Please consider it.

An unusual two days of sunshine forecast for the UK, no way will I be sitting indoors playing computer games.

I'm off shortly to fly my toys, tomorrow out on the mountain bike with probably some photography in the mix too.

Switch off, get outside, get some fresh air, top up your vitamin D (for free) it might be a while before we see another sunny weekend :(

Hey Hooplah - nice page! Just curious - do you know if Jades is playing ED? I spent bucket loads of time on his site back in the day. Wondered if he plays ED or has moved on. Oh and you might want to correct the spelling of his name on your links page.

I did go through a time when ED was the only thing I played, and I got lots of time to play games. Im a single father with a 14yr who is autistic, medically retired, so I really do have shedloads of free time simply because nature and fate have a sick sense of humour. I need games because I need distractions from the pain...no gaming means I gotta deal with the pain. I ddnt have to be sitting playing them all the time, but I do need to be thinking about them.

As it stands now, I dont play much of this...few hours a week in total. Reasons not relevant on this thread. I have other distractions and mass effect 4 will be in front of me the moment I have the money to buy it, although as I type this, I got some fun stuff to do real life today, so thats today sorted.

When ye live like this, ye deal with life on a day to day basis...Im still mobile and functional as a human being, but my illness isnt outwardly visible, so nobody will ever really understand what its like unless they experience it. When I say I need gaming in my life, thats not some wild exaggeration...Im 45 years old, I have had enough life experience to know what works and what doesnt. Escaping real life allows me to recharge my batteries so to speak.

I still hold out a sliver of hope that ED will inspire me again, and I am trying not to be negative about it all the time...but in the meantime, I need something and ED aint that something unfortunately. And theres no point to this reply...just a rant basically ^
