Life without Voice Attack.... no way

Hi I am playing combat missions on beta and loving it.
I love the fact that you actually need skill. I originally was getting owned by everything but can hold my own mostly (until I make that one silly mistake that gives them the edge).

Funny voice attack story... I have been playing ED a lot using VoiceAttack, TrackIR and my X-52 (soon to be X-55) on a very big 65" at 4K res. You know the average kind of gaming rig someone my age usually has :D

The other day I did not have my mic in the room, so I decided to play without it..... OMG!!!!. I am yelling commands at "Ship" and it wasn't listening:
"Target Enemy", "Combat Weapons"...
I had to keep jumping into options to check the key bindings hehe.
I was still yelling commands in the heat of battle though. Its gonna be a problem if I go to someone else's place and they are playing the game.

Kind of like ED Tourette Syndrome ("Zoom In", "Shields!", "Assist Off", "BOOOOOOST!" Damn it!! ).

Come on 29th!!!!

I've been playing with Voice Attack as well, and you're right. It's just great.

You made me think, though... maybe we should change the power-setting for emergency-shield regeneration in combat to [redacted] Shields!"

:p

Lol

I can imagine the looks my wife, and even my dog, would give me if I started talking to my computer, or probably more accurately Yelling at my computer :)

And to think of all the guildie's and Hardcore Gamerz wanting it to run on an ipad or a PS4 ;)

Isn't gaming on real technology delicious?

The funny thing about it is, you dont need VoiceAttack to play the game fully.

But together with TrackIR and nice joystick it adds so much immersion :p

Seriously there arent many keys you need to know in order to play :D

Totally agreed. As soon as I found voice attack I haven't left it alone.

I have even created a voice command to automatically call the station to request docking clearance and another to extend/retract the landing gear. I know I'm lazy but I don't care ;)

I wish I could do that.

Every time I try to attempt to use some voice control more refined than ****, ****, or **** and **** combined - even resorting to the complete overkill of **** gets me nowhere.

I even tried spelling it out to try and be sneaky, but no matter how I say "beer" - my GF won't go to the fridge to get me one if she's busy flying.

So much for voice attack :(

I've got to try VA. Been too lazy lately to set it up

Yeah its a pretty cool bit of software. Defo worth setting it up, doesn't take long and its really useful in combat.:)

Its probably worth spending some more time training the voice detection software in Windows. I did it a few times and its rock solid now :)

Let me point something out here.

You're absolutely right in that you can execute all of the commands with keys and play a damn fine game.

However...

You also mention that using Voice (and Track & a joystick, neither of which I have... yet) adds so much immersion and convenience. If you can play with those things AND they add a bunch of immersion and enjoyment, then playing with just keys is not playing the game fully.

In other words, if there are things that add to the experience over and above playing with just keys, then playing with just keys is not the FULL potential experience.

I absolutely understand the intimidation, but it was super-easy.

Its help-file just directs you through the Windows speech-recognition set-up which takes like a few minutes, and then the entering of a new Elite-profile with your choice of custom commands which are super-easy.

Like, you'll type in "Combat Weapons", and then hit the combination of arrow-keys that that initiates (down-right-up-up-up arrows), and then you're done.

From then, when you say Combat Weapons in-game, you'll get power-settings of 0-4-2.

=D

I should be getting an x-55 joystick delivered today, I just set up my EDtracker and I suppose the next step is some sort of voice control.

However is it not "quicker" to learn the keybinds? I am concerned it wont recognize what I am saying at a critical time or something.

I just tried voice attack i guess its just the way I pronounce thing but it doesnt seem to recognize commands I say all the time. So I dont see myself using it for anything I would use in combat. So that just doesnt justify the purchase for me so far.

Have you taken windows through the voice recognition training yet? That helps.

I am also a convert. Voice attack seems so natural that I wonder why they did not manage yet to include practical voice commands in the OS. I mean, you can also use voice commands in Windows7, but it is so cumbersome because the UI is not made for it.

E:D on the otherhand, it just feels natural. It is like commaning a crew. I use:

- "full speed", "half speed", "zero", "half reverse", "full reverse" and feel truly like Mark Brandis commanding the pilot (famous teenager sci-fi from the 80s in Germany).
- "combat shields" (3/0/3), "full shields" (4/0/2), "travel speed" (2/4/0)
- "landing gear", "cargo scoop" (especially cool because the ship voice-confirms, a StarTrek-like experience)
- "target", "target threat", "next target" (feels like commanding your ship's gun officer)

Once I enter the beta on 29, I will add a command for requesting docking (like, ordering my personal Lt Uhura).

Any other ideas how I could use voiceattack in an immersive way?

Edit: Found the following ideas in the other thread which is linked in here in a later post.

- launch
- go hot/cold
- engage warp
- hyperjump
- boost
- eject cargo
- heat sink
- left/right (for menus)

- evade 1, 2, 3... (some pre-made maneuvers)
- assist (toggle flight assist)
- flip (FAoff, 180 turn, FAon)

I used a trick: My OS and voice-setup is German, but for ED I create additional vocabulary in English. This way, each word has a unique and easy to recognize pattern. Works flawlessly without any additional training.

Try doing it again.

I seem to recall that someone said that they did it a couple-few times and it worked better every time.

Worth a try, anyway. It really is extremely convenient when your VA-commands work well.

Imagine prepping to get out of a station by just saying "Launch-Gear Up-Speed Fifty". It's nice. :p
