LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Well.. for me anyway it has finally happened. I am working my way to Sag A and taking a high / indirect route. Lots of unexplored systems so far.. lol at this rate I may get there in about a month. lol..

However, this evening I have found a class III gas giant with water based life!!!!!!! I am so pumped.....

I am sure there are others that have found life in one form or another, but this is my first. It places some validity to Carl Sagan and the Drake Equation. ( Yes I am old enough to say I watched Cosmos it when it first was aired.. lol )

drake-equation-540px.gif

N = The number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.
R* = The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.
f[SUB]p[/SUB] = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.
n[SUB]e[/SUB] = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.
f[SUB]l[/SUB] = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.
f[SUB]i[/SUB] = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.
f[SUB]c[/SUB] = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

The Drake equation has been turned on its head since the number of exoplanets have exponentially increased. I believe there is a new iteration of it somewhere. Congrats BTW

Yes.. the Drake equation has been updated. It is the Seager equation that SETI uses to base life on other worlds..

However, both numbers tend to be HUGE!!! and I am partial to old school.. lol...

Either way. it is BILLYUNS and BILLYUNS of possibilities.

Where:

  • N is the number of planets with detectable biosignature gases
  • N[SUB]*[/SUB] is the number of stars within the sample
  • F[SUB]Q[/SUB] is the fraction of quiet stars
  • F[SUB]HZ[/SUB] is the fraction with rocky planets in the habitable zone
  • F[SUB]O[/SUB] is the fraction of observable systems
  • F[SUB]L[/SUB] is the fraction with life
  • F[SUB]S[/SUB] is the fraction with detectable spectroscopic signatures

Congrats Commander, maybe we'll get to say g'day somewhere amongst the BILLYUNS of possible systems. Have just passed by the Omega Nebula about 7k lys out. Here's the view from a Jovian with Ammonia based life. That's a cluster of B5's ahead - PW2010 on your chart - Omega Nebula top right.ammonia.jpg

Ahhh yes and now come the days of Xenobiology to be taught along with introductory chaos math in every 3rd grade class circa year 3305.

I'm just a simpleton who thinks water based life means a fish. Lol

On another note, that's quite exciting! Especially in ED, where the number of water and earth-like planets is grossly understated in galactic terms (scientists believe there are hundreds of billions with a "b" earth-like worlds in our galaxy--we should be finding several at a time in a majority of systems).

Which is ironic because the first 4 symbols of the equation spell "NERF"

Water is the solvent used by the replication molecule (DNA) and its associated 'machinery' in us. Ammonia is the solvent used in ammonia based life, which will by definition have a replicating molecule, it may or may not be similar to DNA.

Ooooooo. Amonia based life. Now we are talking. I expect that we will find, probably has already, silica based life.

Personally i am looking forward to someday being able to land on a planet and look at what we have found.

Or even better, running across a new race in their ship scanning me. Now we get interesting.....

I wish you'd stop spreading misinformation based on your misinterpretation of some astrophysicist quotes.

Wasn't there a new amonia based bacteria, found beneath a toxic salt lake, a few years ago? I remember all the media flailing their arms over their heads running around in circles screaming "Aliens! Aliens!" but then they got distracted (as always) by <insert random celeb squirrel here> few days after.

I got to admit that I too have lost focus on this topic. Any progress so far? Did we manage to cultivate/derivate it?

Interesting Threat, btw. Will check in again after some healthy pillow snuggling.

You should post your screen shots of great finds over in the exploration forum. Every one there is pretty friendly.
