I just mucked about with it, first time ever using a DC in Elite Dangerous, and I think it's a bit OP.
The automated modules should make life easier for new (or lazy) commanders, but not better. The ADC boosts around stations and exceeds the speed limits, performing a docking in a pretty decent time. For sure, a competent pilot can do it faster, but still.
IMHO, the (A)DC should -never- exceed speed limits. In fact, it should be limited to 80% or so of the speed limit and generally take a more cautious approach.
This means that new (or lazy) Commanders always have a safe docking option, but there'd be strong incentive to learn manual docking if someone wants to dock faster.
(EDIT: It would also allow people to relax for a bit and enjoy the Blue Danube, which should kick in a bit earlier and a bit louder, IMHO. Instead of relaxing with a mug-o-beverage while docking I was holding my breath at the gung-ho piloting expecting to be smashed into a protruding station part at any moment.)
