Limpet Controller Module Bay

Proposal:
  • Give limpet controllers module bay slots, AND limpet storage space.
  • Limpet controller bays can be fit with non-matching types of controllers.
  • Larger limpet controllers would both have more bays, and more limpet storage
  • Limpets can be pulled from on-board storage or cargo, pulling from cargo first.

Why:
  • Keeps ships from needing to fit both a limpet controller and a cargo rack when they only want to pick up materials
  • Gives a justification for limpet controllers getting so large. Currently a class 7 limpet controller (128 tons of cargo space) is only 4 times as effective as a class 1 limpet controller (2 tons of cargo space).

Right now. The player has a choice. We can fit as many limpet controllers. Like my Anaconda, I can fit 13 Limpet controllers, a Prospector, and 256 cargo hold. But I can adjust this so I have 4 to 8 Controllers and have a larger cargo bay. But collecting ores would be slower.

So right now we have a game of choices.

My suggestion is not about fitting more limpets on your ship. My suggestion is about variety requiring less module slots. For instance, say I want 2 collectors, and 1 prospector. Currently, that would take a class 3 slot for the collectors, and a class 1 slot for the prospector. With my suggestion, you could instead pick a single class 5 limpet controller, and put 2 collectors and 1 prospector in it.

Sandro has said they are looking at a Limpet Bay akin to a Planetary Vehicle Bay/SLF Hanger in concept. For me, if FDev implemented it, it would likely solve the problem of multiple controllers talking up too many module slots.

I heard him mention that. I'm proposing that on-board storage for limpets be added to the controller bays, too. It would be handy for people that need limpets but don't need cargo (fuel rats, mat collectors), and give a justification for how massive the larger limpet bays get.
